Thanks to the SITS Girls, I was able to try out BabbaBox. With BabbaBox, each month you receive a themed based box with activities to do with your children together. This month's theme was Sun, Moon, & Stars. How perfect! My son is all about planets and outer space. He even wants his next room theme to be outer space. This was the perfect box for us! I love that all these great ideas and crafts are conveniently delivered to your door. It is a great way to inspire parents to connect more with their children which is a must in my book!
With each BabbaBox theme you get to Create, Explore, Story Tell, and Connect with your children. In my box we got to Create a glowing moon with paper mache & constellations. We Explored the sky and observed the moon with our very own binoculars. We got to Story Tell the book Twinkle, Star of the Week. And we Connected with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on a digital piano and a planet finder application for the iPhone/iPad/iTouch.
There were so many things to do with this BabbaBox but for this post I am going to focus on the stars. My son and I had a great time creating our very own constellations! I went through a list of star constellations online with him and let him choose which ones he wanted to create. While doing this week discussed various mythology figures and he settled on the constellations Andromeda (the chained lady) and Cetus (the sea monster). We learned that Andromeda was chained to a rock to be eaten by Cetus as a sacrifice to save Cepheus' kingdom. Luckily, she was saved. Whew! I had forgotten how much I liked mythology. Thank you BabbaBox for reminding me!
To make our constellations we placed white star stickers on sun paper to best resemble the constellations we had chosen.
Then we placed the sun paper in direct sunlight for a few minutes (1-5 minutes), until the paper started to lighten up. Don't worry if there isn't too much sun. I did mine with very little sun. Back inside the house, we dunked the sun paper in water for around a minute and removed the star stickers. The water allows the stickers to be removed super easily.
The sun developed the sun paper so when you remove the stars their shape remains on the paper. How neat!
I can't wait to buy some new frames for these and showcase them in big bug's outer space room.
There were also some neat constellation related coloring pages that we had fun coloring together.
