So you are going to your friend's baby shower, and you don't know what to bring. If you know they are formula feeding, a healthy organic formula might be an option to bring to the baby shower.
But, if you feel like being crafty — how about creating and designing a diaper cake? Not just any old three-tier diaper cake but a Tractor diaper cake craft.
You might think it's too hard, but it won't be once you are done with this tutorial and videos.

First things first, you need to find out what kind of theme your friend's baby shower will have. Find out if it's a monkey theme, pink and brown theme, Mickey Mouse, etc. Whatever it is, find out asap!
Once you know what the theme is, you are going to need some supplies. You can get everything below at your local dollar store, BABIES R US store, or our favorite place Amazon:
Tractor Diaper Cake Supplies
- One plush toy; make sure it's theme-specific. If they are having an elephant baby shower, then get a small baby elephant plush doll.
- One paper towel tube
- Two cotton balls
- One black sharpie marker
- One pacifier
- Three rubber bands
- One glue gun or strong double-sided tape
- Two big pins
- 1 1/2 inch satin ribbon spool; if possible, try to make it theme-specific.
- One dishwasher basket
- One receiving blanket; try to make it theme-related. If they are throwing a ladybug shower, then get a ladybug print receiving blanket.
- 75 diapers for newborns.
Okay, now that you got all the supplies, it's time to get to work on the wheels. Some people don't even want to attempt this project because they think the wheels look too complicated. Don't worry, though — it's really easy if you use a few kitchen items!
You need one large saute pan and 30 diapers to make two big wheels. Plus, a medium pan and 15 diapers to make a medium-sized wheel.
The technique here is pretty simple. Just line up the diapers into the saute pan and continue to do so until they come full circle, then you snap on a rubber band. Take it out of the saute pan for decorating.
Here are two videos showing you how it's done:

How to Make a Big Wheel
After you got your wheels done, it's time to apply your satin ribbons. You could use a glue gun or double-sided tape.
I would stick (no pun intended) with the glue gun because you don't ever have to worry about it becoming undone once you apply it.
How to Decorate Your Wheel with a Glue Gun
Now that you got the challenging parts done. It's all easy sailing from here on out:
- Wrap your basket with the receiving blanket.
- Attach it with your big pin.
- Attach the two big wheels with the paper towel tube.
- Rest one end of the tractor chassis on the tube (between the big wheels).
- Rest the other end of the tractor chassis on the Mid-sized wheel.
- Place the pen behind the chassis, so it looks like an exhaust.
- Place the theme-related plush doll on top of the chassis, towards the mid-sized wheel.
- Put the pacifier in front of the plush doll as if it were a steering wheel.

Thank you for this post. 2021 seems to be a year of weddings and of babies for my family. 3 wedding invites as of now and several babies will be here during the summer months. I am crafty and with the videos I should be able to make a couple of the baby gifts at least.
I know what you mean – my husband just found out his cousin is expecting another baby!
I’ve not made one myself but I have ordered one made by someone I know for a baby shower I threw for my daughter in law.
Etsy is a great place to buy diaper cakes if you aren’t into making them. They have some really cute ones on there.
I made them years ago. I mainly did it for fun and I gave a class on how to make them.
Wow, a class. I bet yours look awesome!
I have never heard of a diaper cake before! So creative! And I love the practicality of the gift – every expectant mother I’ve known LOVES to receive diapers!
Yes, diapers as a gift are always welcomed. Plus this is cute and made with love!
I’ve never heard of it. so, no, I’ve never made one.
You should try to make it if you are ever invited to a baby shower. The mom to be will love it!
I have never made on myself. However, I have seen them at baby showers. They look super cute most of the time.
I’ve never made a diaper cake. I did have one made though for the shower I had for my daughter in law
I am very uncrafty so I have never attempted one. However I think they are adorable!
I bet you could do it if you tried! It’d be great to give as a baby shower gift.
While it looks adorable on the gift table at the shower, I would much rather give a regular package of diapers. Each diaper is rolled and taped together, and it is a tedious task removing the tape from each one.. So, in my opinion, they make a nice presentation, but are impractical.
I have given these as gifts many times and many of the mothers said the rolled and taped diaper didn’t even cross their mind as they used them up. I think it would ultimately depend on the person you were giving the gift to.
I’ve always loved diaper cakes. They’re so cute! Sadly, I’ve never made one before but I’d pay someone to do it!~
I don’t blame you on the paying someone part. It DOES take a bit of patience but once you’ve made one or two, it becomes easier!
How. adorable is this. This is perfect for the future little boys coming into our lives.
I’ve never made a diaper cake for anyone.
It can be changed into pink or any other color for girls as well. Once you’ve made one once, it gets easier and is a fun and appreciated gift.
Thank you for sharing. This is really a cute idea. We may try this craft out.
that is so cool. I’ve never built a diaper cake but it looks fun because I love crafts
It takes patience but it’s definitely fun to make. Especially if you love crafts!
Oh wow this is so cute! Perfect for a baby shower!
Yes! It can be a centerpiece and works well as a gift too!
We had one of these at our baby shower!
My friend Sandy has a daughter who is due this spring – I have to show her this. Too cute.
That would be great if you showed her this 🙂
what a cool way to celebrate a baby. I think these diaper cakes are fabulous.
Thanks! It’s great fun to make for a baby shower 🙂
Diaper cakes are too cute! Great tutorial!
And fun to make too. Thanks 🙂
I’m glad you all like the post and videos, thanks so much.
I wanted to let you know I directed people over to your post today. If you want me to take my post down let me know and I will. But I love the cake and wanted to showcase it to my readers.
That was very sweet of you!! I’m going to head over to your site to check everything out 🙂
This is such a good idea and the cutest thing ever. I will bookmark this for the future when I need it. 🙂
Awe thanks Susan!
This looks awesome and would be great to have at a baby shower for a baby boy
It would be great for a baby boys shower! My friends are always having girls though. Sigh.
I made one for a girl. Any farm family who is expecting a girl would love it. Just use pink receivig blankets . I also used the frilly stetchy headbands to hold the blanket on the basket. Girls like tractors too!
I agree with pink it would be great for a girl too. Love the headband idea.
