woman smiling: 7 Common Teeth Problems And What You Can Do About Them

We all know that brushing our teeth each day is important, but sometimes we may not be aware of why we are doing this. If you're not sure what you should be doing about your oral hygiene, then it's possible that you can slip up in some way. For that reason, we have put together an article that explores seven common teeth problems that everyone should be familiar with. We will briefly go over each one before discussing potential treatment options. Keep reading to learn more!

If you're worried about your teeth, there are a number of problems and issues that you can have. Learn more here! Click To Tweet

Bad Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common problem that can have a variety of causes.  Just like most common teeth problems, this is due to poor oral hygiene. If you don't brush and floss your teeth regularly, food particles can remain in your mouth and cause bacteria to build up. This can lead to bad breath.

Other causes of bad breath include dry mouth, smoking, certain foods (garlic and onions), and medical conditions like sinus infections.

If you are concerned about bad breath, the best thing to do is to practice good oral hygiene. This means brushing your teeth (and tongue) at least twice a day and flossing once a day.

You should also avoid smoking and eating foods that are known to cause bad breath. If you have dry mouth, you can try chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on hard candy to help stimulate saliva production.

If you have bad breath that doesn't go away with good oral hygiene, you should see your dentist to find out if there is a more serious underlying condition like an oral infection.

Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth can be a real pain.  If you have sensitive teeth, you may feel pain or discomfort when eating or drinking hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods. You may also notice that your teeth are more sensitive to extreme temperatures.

There are several reasons why someone might have sensitive teeth. The most common reason is tooth decay, like many other common teeth problems. When the enamel on your teeth starts to break down, it can expose the dentin underneath. The dentin is a softer tissue that contains tiny tubes that lead to nerve endings in your teeth. This can make your teeth more sensitive.

Other causes of sensitive teeth include gum disease, worn tooth enamel, and cracked teeth.

If you have sensitive teeth, there are several things you can do to help ease the discomfort. You can use toothpaste that is designed for sensitive teeth. These kinds of toothpaste typically contain potassium nitrate, which helps to block the pain signals from the nerves in your teeth. You can also ask your dentist about getting a fluoride treatment, which can help to strengthen your tooth enamel.

If you have sensitive teeth, see your dentist for an evaluation. They can determine the cause of your sensitivity and recommend the best treatment options.

Cavities

Cavities are one of the most common teeth problems.  A cavity is a small hole in your tooth caused by tooth decay. When the enamel on your teeth starts to break down, it can create a perfect environment for bacteria to grow. Over time, this can lead to a cavity.

A cavity can be a problem for pregnant women especially. Although dental care during pregnancy is often overlooked, it is essential for maintaining good oral health. Pregnant women are at increased risk for cavities due to changes in hormone levels and increased cravings for sugary foods.

In addition, morning sickness can lead to acid erosion of tooth enamel. To reduce the risk of cavities, pregnant women should brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and avoid sugary snacks.

Cavities can cause pain and sensitivity. If they are not treated, they can eventually lead to more serious problems like infection.

The best way to prevent cavities is again to practice good oral hygiene. You should also avoid sugary foods and drinks, especially before bed.

Underbites And Overbites

Underbites and overbites are common dental concerns that can cause a number of issues. An underbite is when the bottom teeth protrude in front of the top teeth. An overbite is when the top teeth protrude in front of the bottom teeth.

Both of these conditions can be caused by genetics, thumb sucking, or an early loss of baby teeth.

Underbites and overbites can cause a number of problems. If left untreated, they can also lead to TMJ disorders. Thankfully, they both can be treated. You should visit experts such as Straight My Teeth, who can explain how an underbite correction works and break down the cost.

Root Infections

Root infections are another common teeth problems that could affect you at some point. This is caused by bacteria entering through a cavity or a crack in the tooth before working their way down to the root. It could also have happened due to leaky fillings or damage, especially after high impact and trauma.

A root infection can cause pain, sensitivity, and swelling. If left untreated, it could eventually lead to an abscess.

If you think you may have a root infection, you should see your dentist for a root canal. This is a procedure that will remove the infected tissue from your tooth. Once the infection is gone, your dentist will fill the empty space with a material called gutta-percha.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common dental concern that can lead to more serious problems if it is not treated. It is an inflammation of the gums that is caused by bacteria. If left untreated, it can eventually lead to periodontal disease, a more serious infection of the gums.

Gingivitis can cause red, swollen, and tender gums. You may also notice that your gums bleed when you brush your teeth.

The best way to prevent gingivitis is to practice good oral hygiene. You should also see your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups.

Crowded Teeth

This occurs when there is not enough space for all of your teeth to align properly.

Crowded teeth can cause a number of problems. They can make it difficult to brush and floss properly, leading to cavities and gum disease. They can also cause pain and irritation.

If you have crowded teeth, you may need to see an orthodontist for treatment. Orthodontists are dental specialists who focus on straightening teeth. They will be able to recommend the best treatment options for you, which may include braces or clear aligners.

Final Thoughts on Common Teeth Problems

As you can see, there are a few common teeth problems that everyone should be aware of. By knowing what these issues are and how to treat them, you can keep your smile looking good and your teeth healthy!
