Back when it was warmer I had the chance to review The Ultimate Dinosaur Dig Kit. It was perfect for my dirt loving son! So when I had the opportunity to review the Real Bug Dig Kit from Discover with Dr. Cool I jumped on the chance.
My boys are bug lovers too. Well, if you count wanting to kill most of them that is. They love squishing ants. Poor things. As long as they aren't in my house I'm okay but they better watch out if they are! I made a homemade ant spray just for such reasons.
The Real Bug Dig Kit ($12) goes along the same principals as The Ultimate Dinosaur Dig Kit except here you are digging up really cool bugs instead of dinosaur bones. There's a scorpion, spiny spider, and a fortune beetle.
In the included adventure guide you get to look about each of these as well as some interesting facts about insects. It's very interesting! I didn't know scorpions had more than two eyes. And for extra fun there's an activity booklet with a word search, hidden pictures, dot to dots, and more.
The Real Bug Dig Kit includes a digging block shaped like a beetle, excavation tools (digging tool, brush and magnifying glass), an adventure guide, an activity booklet, and of course the real insect specimens within the digging block. Everything your young entomologist needs to excavate some incredible creatures.
I would highly recommend doing your excavation of the digging block outside. Pieces get everywhere! I however didn't have the chance to do that this time so I laid down a blanket and let my son go to town since it was too cold outside.
I had my 4 year old do the excavation of The Ultimate Dinosaur Dig Kit so this time it was my 8 year olds turn. He chipped away, stabbed, and dug his way through the digging block.
It was harder than he thought it would be so I ran the block under the faucet to make it a little easier. He made comments about trying to kill the beetle as he stabbed the beetle's head and different body parts. Boys.
At first my son thought nothing was in there because he wasn't finding anything. Probably because he would jump around the digging block making holes instead of concentrating on one spot. In the end it took my son about 15 minutes to find the three real insect specimens from The Real Bug Dig Kit block.
Once he found all of the bugs he grabbed the digging block and broke it in half. Then he was like “I should of done that along time ago. It would of made it go faster.”. Kids.
My boys were really excited to see the cool bugs within the block and learn about them from the adventure guides. The Real Bug Dig Kit is a fun scavenger hunt meets paleontologist type of activity. It's great fun! And you learn something too.
It would be a perfect gift for any kid aged 6-12 that is interested in bugs, science, entomology, or paleontology.
