The holiday season has arrived, and you know what that means; it’s time to decorate! I know that with the wild year that we have had, many of my friends and family are choosing to go all out in decorating their homes this year.
Have you started thinking about decorating yet?
I have always loved window decorations for the holidays. It’s such an easy place to decorate and show your love for the season!
Plus, since your windows are a smaller area, it’s less overwhelming to take on this decorating project.
If you are ready to start decorating on a smaller scale, here are some easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season.
Want to decorate your windows this holiday season? To help you out, we've rounded up some of our favorite Christmas window decorations right here! Click To TweetDecorating Your Windows For Christmas
There are many easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season, but I have highlighted some of my favorites in hopes that it gets your home decorated festively for the holidays and puts a smile on the faces of you and your loved ones.
Use Curtains
One of the easiest ways to decorate your windows this holiday season is to simply get holiday-themed curtains or window treatments. This could even work if you use holiday colored curtains.
While you may not want to spend money on window treatments that will only be up for a matter of weeks, consider that these can be used year after year.
Light Them Up
Holiday lights are just so much fun, aren’t they? I love all that you can do with them!
One of the many uses for those strings of holiday lights is to decorate your windows with them.
Here are a couple of examples of how you can use lights to decorate your windows this holiday season:
- Use the lights to frame the window.
- String them through garland and apply to the border or just the bottom of the window
- You can even buy image shaped lights that are specifically meant to be displayed in your window (this is definitely the easiest way to go)
Clings
If you are headed to the dollar store or even your local big box store, you can check out their selection of window clings that are holiday-themed.
This is an easy to install and easy to clean up type of decor for those that want super simple!
Let Your Tree Do It
Now your Christmas tree might just be the ultimate in easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season!
Think about it. You are already going to put up and decorate your tree, so it’s not any added work.
However, we like to have a separate window tree since the best window in the front of our house is in an office.
If you are going to have two trees, I suggest making your window tree a super simple setup and use Nearly Natural.
With over 350 Christmas trees to chose from, you are sure to find a tree that fits your needs.
Our tree from Nearly Natural was super easy to put up. It was pre-lit and only in three separate pieces. There was no having to put each branch on individually, which, let's face it, no one enjoys doing.
It worked perfectly for our needs!
However, if you don't want to mess with a second full-sized tree, you can find small (1.5 foot) lighted trees for less than $10 at some stores, and these can easily be put on your window sills.
How cute would it be to have all of your windows decorated with their own tree this year?
Candles
If your window sill is wide enough, candles make great holiday decor!
Many cultures have a holiday tradition of lighting candles, which means your decor can be both easy and traditional.
You could also find battery-powered candles if you are concerned about the fire risk.
Wreaths
Nothing quite says the holiday season like wreaths. Wreaths are not just for doors anymore either!
Many people choose to use wreaths to decorate their windows. It’s a pretty yet minimal holiday look that is easy to accomplish.
Whether you make or buy your wreaths, they can be any size you wish so that they can work well with any size window.
Holiday Trinkets
If you have a decent-sized window sill, merely placing your cute holiday trinkets there can do the trick. I’ve seen lots of little ceramic home villages, quite a few Santa figures, and even elves and reindeer gracing the window sills of homes that I have driven by.
All of these have added a super cute holiday element to their homes.
Wrapping Paper
One of the most creative ways I have seen people decorate their windows is by wrapping them up in wrapping paper. This makes them look like a little gift!
While this option doesn’t work for those who prefer to see out of their windows, it’s one of the most unique of the easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season that we have talked about.
The easiest way to accomplish this look is to tape the paper up to the inside of your window. That’s it.
What do you think of these easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season? Can you think of any others to add to the list?
I don’t put up a Christmas tree in my apartment because it is so small there is no place for one. I do enjoy seeing Christmas decorations, especially traditional, colorful decor.
Awe, could you fit one of those little Christmas trees? We used to have a little LED when we lived in a super small place.
We did not put our tree in the window this year. It is only a foot and a half feet tall, I put it in front of my green screen…
Your Christmas tree sounds adorable
Yes, we put our tree in front of a window. I love white lights. We have them in every room this time of year.
I’m a fan of white lights too especially the blinking Christmas lights
We do not place the tree in he window. We do however decorate with our vintage Hallmark Ornaments, red bows, and candy canes.
Sounds like a great classic Christmas tree
I really don’t do much decorating but next year I am going to use these tips and go all out.
What kind of Christmas decorations did you put up?
I don’t have the option of putting the tree in front of the window as it would block my desk where I have to work every day. Instead it goes in the corner of the living room and I can see it while I’m working.
Sounds like you have a great view while working!
I love decorating the tree because I have saved all of my children’s ornaments they have made over the years; I reminisce about when they were younger and the fun we had
Memory ornaments are my favorite kind of Christmas ornaments too!
We put our tree in the corner of our living room. It is not directly in front of a window, but it can be seen from the yard and street. I used to love decorating the tree a lot more when my girls were younger, but now my youngest (20) seems to have taken over decorating duty. She loves to decorate for the holidays!
That’s great you’re daughter has taken over holiday decorating. It’s great to give Mommy a break!
What an absolutely beautiful Tree!
Thanks! Please, tell us what your Christmas tree looked like 🙂
We put our tree near a window and you can see it from the outside. I love to decorate! Decorating the tree with special ornaments is my favorite part of Christmas.
I bet it looks lovely! Tell us about your favorite Christmas ornament
We have a new house with a big front window and it’s the perfect spot for a tree. I have my mom’s old tiny tree and would love a bigger one. I love watching the kids get so excited putting the different ornaments on the tree. They are just old enough to really understand and enjoy it all.
Sounds like you are making some great Christmas memories
beautful!we always have our tree in the corner adjacent to one window.we love decorating in november for holidays!my favorite thing about christmas decorating is the holiday spirit we all get!
Haha that’s a No-No in our house. My husband doesn’t like to decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving
Yes I usually put it by a window but this year we moved so I had to put it in a corner it turn out pretty good and My favorite thing about Christmas decorations is having everyone put one special ornament on the tree !
Do you guys make ornaments or buy special Christmas ornaments from places?
We put our tree in the front window so it sparkles and shines from there! I love Christmas and decorate the whole house!
I bet your house looks amazing at Christmas
I for sure always put my tree in front of the window, I love how the lights reflect off the glass! The very best part about decorating is pulling out all of my daughters handmade ornaments every year!
I love looking at Christmas ornaments the kids made over the years too
I need a new artificial tree. We lost ours in a devastating fire in our apartment complex and I haven’t been able to replace it as I have had so much to replace. This year was a very sad Christmas, no tree, no lights. And what was worse, there is a family who sell live trees in front of our local Rite Aid Pharmacy (now a walgreens) they have been the same family selling there from Canada for over 40 years that I have lived in this neighborhood, they did not come this year! I was crestfallen! I can’t buy from them because of my asthma which is why I always go artificial, but they are just such a part of the fabric of my neighborhood that not seeing them this year made things feel even more bleak.
I’m so sorry to hear about the fire! That’s awful!! I hope you were able to figure something out as far as a tree goes for Christmas
We always have our tree in the front of the window. It looks so beautiful when you walk or ride by plus we have an open concept room so we enjoy it from the living and dining room as well. I have a wonderful collection of ornaments that have special meanings, and I enjoy reminiscing over them as I place them on the tree.
Having an open concept floor plan makes holiday decorating so much easier
I do not put my Christmas tree in the window because I don’t want the decorations to fade. My favorite thing about Christmas is spending time with my family.
That’s true if your window gets a lot of sun ornaments could fade over time
Looks amazing!
How did you decorate for the holidays?
Love decorating for Christmas! I always put our tree up in front of the window. Gotta show it off!
Awesome – People love seeing Christmas trees!
We put our Christmas tree on our enclosed front porch so everyone driving by could see it. We love decorating with ornaments that we have collected over the years.
I love collecting Christmas ornaments!
We put our Christmas Tree by window. Our favorite thing about Christmas decorating is making memories as a family.
How did you celebrate Christmas this past year?
Looks absolutely stunning!!
I live in an apt so we put the tree wherever it will fit lol It is in our side window currently. I love how happy decorating makes me.
Holiday decorating is fun!
We put our Christmas tree in front of the window so everyone can see it. Over the last 42 yrs I’ve made and collected angle ornaments so that now I have 4 containers of just angel ornaments
Thats a really neat holiday tradition
I just moved into a new house and the living room is in the back of the house.
but I put the tree near the window / the neighbors out back can see it. 🙂
I bet your neighbors love seeing your Christmas tree
this year our tree is by our window. no lights …i will get some on maybe. it’s a real christmas tree this year, ornaments and some garland. it’s absolutely beautiful. the 8 ft. tree is gorgeous.
It would looking amazing with some Christmas lights I’m sure
We always put the tree up by the window so neighbors can see! 🙂 I love decorating the Christmas tree with friends and family as it gives us a chance to step away from our busy lives and bond together.
Decorating for holidays is a great bonding experience
I do not put my tree in the window because it would encourage the cats to climb on it to see out side and then they would knock it over. My favorite think about decorating is seeing my home come alive with holiday spirit!
Surprisingly our cats don’t mess with the christmas tree too much but they do love sleeping underneath it
we used to put our tree in front of the window. We ended up moving our whole living room around, so now we always put it in the corner. I love where it is and I love Christmas time and decorating. My tree is actually really small right now.
How tall was your Christmas tree?
It was smaller than my kids and I think was like 3 ft.
Little Christmas trees can be so cute
We do both. Some years in the window. Sometimes close enough to see the lights.
Thanks for the chance.
I bet your Christmas tree looks lovely
Since I was a child my mom bought me a new Christmas ornament every year. I continued the tradition with my daughter. We decorate the tree with the ornaments we receive every year, and I still have my very first ornament that I use. It’s nostalgic for me, and I love remembering my childhood with every ornament I have.
That’s great that all of your ornaments have memories! I like to do that too with special ornaments
I like these tips. I wish I could get my tree in my front window. This house is weird.
I get that – putting the Christmas tree in a window isn’t in the cards for everyone
I do not put my Christmas Tree up in the window. I have a small lighted one on our dresser in the bedroom. My favorite thing about Christmas decorating is setting up my Christmas Village! I have a HUGE collection and it is so fun to set up every year! My boyfriend is even getting into it now.
Wow that sounds amazing! I’m sure the Christmas Village looks so festive
We usually put our little tree in front of our window. We usually have 2 little deers outside the window.
I love lighted reindeer in the yard at Christmas
Our tree goes on the wall across from the window. The layout of our living room makes it hard to have couches anywhere else! We decorate EVERYTHING!!! Outside and inside. I always say we need more lights!!
Sounds like your house looks lovely at Christmas time
I love decorating for Christmas even in my small apartment, my small tree on my sofa table is all I really need, so I don’t put it in a window but behind my sofa
We did that too – had a small christmas tree on a table when we lived in apartments
My christmas tree wouldnt be in a good place if it was in front of my window. I do have it in the living room. I love spending time with family on Christmas. I love watching Christmas movies.
What are some of your favorite Christmas movies?
Great ideas because I have a huge set of windows that face the road so i like to decorate them
I love houses that have a lot of windows. Bet it looks so lovely at Christmas!
I put my tree in the window. I spray fake snow around the window and put lights around it. It looks amazing.
Do you have any pictures of the fake snow in the windows? Sounds lovely!
Since this is to be used to answer questions for the tree contest, I hope this is the right place. We put our tree in the window, since it is a perfect location for it in the living room. My favorite thing about Christmas is that there is a general feeling of joy in the atmosphere, even when times are not generally easy or joyful at all.
That’s great you can put your Christmas tree in a window!
Lots of good information. We do the window clings and some image shaped lights.
Window clings are a great choice!
I do not leave my Christmas tree directly in front of the window, but I leave it positioned just so that people driving by can see it in my dinning room. It looks lovely from the road, which is important to me since one of my favorite things to do each holiday is drive around town and admire the Christmas lights.
I think it’s great if you can see a Christmas tree in any window of a house
Wrapping paper! Genius! I We have a bunch of interior glass doors that trick would look great with! I am sending my daughter into the livingroom armed with tape and wrapping paper right now.
Wrapping interior doors with wrapping paper is a great Christmas decorating idea too!
My favorite part of decorating is finding unique designs in the stores and online. I like spending time with my family putting up decorations. It makes the house looks festive.
How did you end up decorating for Christmas?
I put mine in the back window because that’s where our living room window is. My favorite thing about decorating is putting the candy canes on.
My kids love putting candy canes on the Christmas tree too!
Just so beautiful window trees are the best. I love walking through town and seeing all the trees in the windows. That’s such a great look. My city has a Festival of Trees every year.
I bet the Christmas tree festival is gorgeous!
We put ours in the middle of the dining room. It’s an old, family tree that we’ve had for a long time.
That’s great your Christmas tree has seen so many wonderful family moments
I don’t put my tree in the window because there isnt a window in the foyer where the tree goes. I love everything about decorating but my favorite part is that my kids get so excited about it.
The Christmas spirit kids have is wonderful to watch!
i just did put our tree up and we decorated it together. if i had to choose my favorite thing about decorating for the holidays i guess it would be the togetherness of it we do it as a family or a couple. and its very romantic and endearing of moments.
That’s the perfect choice – Christmas is the perfect time for family bonding!
I don’t usually put my tree in front of my window because that’s where the dogs beds are. I do use swag and lights to decorate and make them festive.
Swag and Christmas lights in the window sound lovely!
Yes, we have a huge window in our living room and we put the tree in front of the window every year. I love the reflection from the lights bouncing off the glass; it looks cozy and beautiful.
The reflecting lights of your Christmas tree against your window must look magical
The tree looks absolutely beautiful! We have always used artificial trees but haven’t found one that is truly natural-looking.
We do a mix – one fake and one real tree. I just love the smell of freshly cut Christmas trees!
I don’t put our Christmas tree near the window, but we do enjoy decorating it and setting everything up. My favorite part is putting the star on top 🙂
What kind of Christmas star do you have? I need a new one.
I love the lettering on the windows! It is beautiful and looks easy.
Christmas window drawings are perfect if you are artistic
We have a big bay window we put our tree in front of. I love all the different color lights .
Bay windows are the perfect spot for a Christmas tree!
I always put my tree in the window, I always enjoy being able to see someone’s tree in their window when we drive around and look at Christmas lights. It makes the house look cozy. Sometimes I put window clings or the little battery operated candles in the window, but I always try to put my tree in front of the window and am a little sad if it doesn’t work for the house I live in.
It does depend on the floor plan of your house but decorating your windows any way you can for Christmas is a win in my book
My husband put our Christmas Tree in front of our dine windows. My best thing about Christmas is people seem more cheerful. But I know people are dealing with so much this holiday season.
The holidays are both joyous and stressful, but we made it through 2020. Yay!
Those are some great ideas! My grandkids love to put cling on decorations on windows and mirrors! Thank you for sharing!
Christmas window clings are always great fun for kids
I think it depends on how I feel when i put the trees, yes trees they are small ones, up. Sometimes you can see one from the window and sometimes not. And with little kitties running around this year it will probably not be in the window.
Hehe, my cats like our Christmas tree too. Mostly they just like to hang out underneath it though
As a single working Mom, for security, I do NOT put my Christmas Tree in the window. But I do have some other decorations outside in the front yard because just seeing them makes me feel joyful and happy!
That’s true — burglaries are probably higher during this time of year
I typically put my Christmas tree in my living room so that it can be seen through 2 windows in that room. I like to decorate my tree with Angel ornaments that I have collected throughout the years.
That sounds like a fun Christmas tradition
I wish i could put my tree in front of a window, but how our room is layed out its just not possible. Now that i have a little one i love seeing how excited he gets when its time to decorate.
I wish my kids were still excited about decorating the Christmas tree lol
We don’t have room to put our tree directly in front of the window but you can see the tree thru the front window and door.
I bet your Christmas tree looks lovely
We don’t put our tree I’m front of the window, but it can be seen fr the road just slightly. I love the nostalgia that comes with decorating the tree. We buy ornaments for special occasions and it’s always nice to reminisce when we put them up each year.
We do the same thing with Christmas ornaments!
the thing i like about putting up my Christmas tree is seeing all the ornaments i have going over the years and recalling what happen that year and what i had goting and well i just have a lot of fun putting up the tree every year.
It is fun looking through all of the old Christmas ornaments
I love having my tree in front of the window. Not only can I have the beauty of looking at my tree inside my house but I am able to see it immediately from outside. The window is a perfect frame for my tree. The beauty of it from outside adds to my outside decor.
I know right – I love when holiday decorations do double duty
I would put the tree in the corner of my living room. We don’t have a good spot in front of the window.
We like to put the tree in the window, I like the lights and pretty ornaments.
I love Christmas trees in the window but I don’t really have the window space, sadly. My favorite is getting the tree up though. It never feels quite like Christmas until the tree is up.
Yes, I agree. The tree is the must-have for Christmas
We also put our tree near a window, but it isn’t centered as perfectly. We add a pine wreath to our door with star lights and that is about all we decorate.
Even the simplest decorations can have a big impact
My current home (MCM ranch) only has high windows so you could only see the topper if I put my tree in front of the window. I love decorating every room of my house with Christmas decor, yes, even the bathrooms!
My mom decorated the bathroom too! I remember when I was little my mother used to have a Santa toilet seat cover lol
I love when people put their Christmas tree in the window but with the way our apartment was build and things I can’t really show my tree in the window. You can see it a little bit though. But I do have a bunch of these Christmas silhouette lights that I put in my windows/ They are different shapes like angels, trees etc. made of little colored tree lights. Heck I love Christmas decorating period.
Christmas silhouette lights sound like a great addition to any window during the holidays
I don’t usually put my Christmas tree in the window, but rather in a corner of our living room where it fits nicely. I absolutely love Christmas decorations and my favorite thing about them is the joy it brings me to sit and look at them. It is so relaxing to watch Christmas lights and it truly gives me a joy like no other.
Sitting by a Christmas tree does give off that magical feeling most of us love
We always put our tree in the window. I love the entire family coming together and decorating the house in Celebration of Christmas.
Sounds lovely! I hope you have a fabulous Christmas

Your Christmas tree sounds lovely
I have to say love Artificial Trees not having to worry about the pine needles on the floor. Great ways to decorated for the holidays not done candles do it this year. @020 been a rough need alot of Christmas spirit
Yes agree we all could use a lot of Christmas spirit this year
Yes, we put our Christmas tree in the window. My favorite thing about Christmas decorating is the feeling of joy while doing it.
It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year for a reason 😉
We do put our Christmas tree in the window for everyone to see from the road, one in the kitchen, one on our deck too. Love Christmas and Jesus.
Ohhh I love that you have several Christmas trees!!
Our studio is too small to put it in the window but we certainly enjoy it where it is. My favorite thing about decorating is the colorful lights.
Christmas lights definitely make the season Feel more Festive
We used to put our Christmas tree in our front window – but it’s in the home office room. Instead of getting another tree to place in our family room to be seen & enjoyed by the family the most, we moved the tree from the front window. We place lighted wreaths in the front window instead now.
A lighted Christmas wreath in the front window is a great alternative to a Christmas tree!
All great tips and Love all the ways you can decorate
Do you decorate for Christmas?
We usually do not put the tree near a window because in the past it has dried out a real tree. Also if it is near the window then we do not get to enjoy the beauty because of the locations of the windows.
I understand — your window placement has to be right in order to put a Christmas tree in the window. That’s why we have two 🙂
What a great looking tree this is, I love how easy this tree is to set up and how full it looks. I also like that I won’t have to worry about pine needles everywhere.
@tisonlyme143
I do have to admit stepping on Christmas tree pine needles isn’t Fun lol
I love decorating for Christmas even the walls inside my home and the outdoors. I put my Christmas tree in front of our window so everyone passing by can see the Christmas cheer and the lights.
I love that you go all out for Christmas
I’m getting in the mood for decorating this year! Those white lights on the tree look so gorgeous!
How has your Christmas decorating been going?
looks festive
I enjoy seeing lights during the holidays/Christmas. Several years back my upstairs had a full length window and I live right off the highway so it was visible to all traffic. I had 2 tomato cages so I decided to take one of them and bent the top into a point like a Christmas tree. I strung lights all over it and turned it on at night. No one would have guessed I used a tomato cafe but in that full length upstairs window it looked so pretty. Every year so many commented on how much they enjoyed my upstairs tree. Decorating gets me starting my projects for Christmas and helps me remember the true meaning of the season.
That’s a great trick to decorate your windows with a “tree”!
I love Christmas and decorating for it, it’s my favorite time of the year! I love putting a tree in the window, it makes it look so beautiful and cozy from the outside! My favorite part is the lights and the smell of the freshly cut tree. 🙂
I love the smell of Christmas trees too
I do not put my tree in front of my window. I absolutely love Christmas lights. They are just so beautiful.
Do you decorate the outside of your house with Christmas lights?
We put our tree near a window in the living room, but it isn’t in the front of the house. I always enjoy looking at the ornaments of the years past and the memories attached to them.
I love doing that with Christmas ornaments too
