Easy Ways to Decorate Your Windows This Holiday Season

The holiday season has arrived, and you know what that means; it’s time to decorate! I know that with the wild year that we have had, many of my friends and family are choosing to go all out in decorating their homes this year.

Have you started thinking about decorating yet?

I have always loved window decorations for the holidays. It’s such an easy place to decorate and show your love for the season!

Plus, since your windows are a smaller area, it’s less overwhelming to take on this decorating project.

If you are ready to start decorating on a smaller scale, here are some easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season.

Want to decorate your windows this holiday season? To help you out, we've rounded up some of our favorite Christmas window decorations right here! Click To Tweet

Decorating Your Windows For Christmas

There are many easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season, but I have highlighted some of my favorites in hopes that it gets your home decorated festively for the holidays and puts a smile on the faces of you and your loved ones.

Use Curtains

One of the easiest ways to decorate your windows this holiday season is to simply get holiday-themed curtains or window treatments. This could even work if you use holiday colored curtains.

While you may not want to spend money on window treatments that will only be up for a matter of weeks, consider that these can be used year after year.

Light Them Up

Holiday lights are just so much fun, aren’t they? I love all that you can do with them!

One of the many uses for those strings of holiday lights is to decorate your windows with them.

Here are a couple of examples of how you can use lights to decorate your windows this holiday season:

  • Use the lights to frame the window.
  • String them through garland and apply to the border or just the bottom of the window
  • You can even buy image shaped lights that are specifically meant to be displayed in your window (this is definitely the easiest way to go)

Clings

If you are headed to the dollar store or even your local big box store, you can check out their selection of window clings that are holiday-themed.

This is an easy to install and easy to clean up type of decor for those that want super simple!

Let Your Tree Do It

nearly natural christmas tree

Now your Christmas tree might just be the ultimate in easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season!

Think about it. You are already going to put up and decorate your tree, so it’s not any added work.

However, we like to have a separate window tree since the best window in the front of our house is in an office.

If you are going to have two trees, I suggest making your window tree a super simple setup and use Nearly Natural.

nearly natural christmas tree

With over 350 Christmas trees to chose from, you are sure to find a tree that fits your needs.

Our tree from Nearly Natural was super easy to put up. It was pre-lit and only in three separate pieces. There was no having to put each branch on individually, which, let's face it, no one enjoys doing.

It worked perfectly for our needs!

However, if you don't want to mess with a second full-sized tree, you can find small (1.5 foot) lighted trees for less than $10 at some stores, and these can easily be put on your window sills.

How cute would it be to have all of your windows decorated with their own tree this year?

Candles

If your window sill is wide enough, candles make great holiday decor!

Many cultures have a holiday tradition of lighting candles, which means your decor can be both easy and traditional.

You could also find battery-powered candles if you are concerned about the fire risk.

Wreaths

Nothing quite says the holiday season like wreaths. Wreaths are not just for doors anymore either!

Many people choose to use wreaths to decorate their windows. It’s a pretty yet minimal holiday look that is easy to accomplish.

Whether you make or buy your wreaths, they can be any size you wish so that they can work well with any size window.

Holiday Trinkets

If you have a decent-sized window sill, merely placing your cute holiday trinkets there can do the trick. I’ve seen lots of little ceramic home villages, quite a few Santa figures, and even elves and reindeer gracing the window sills of homes that I have driven by.

All of these have added a super cute holiday element to their homes.

Wrapping Paper

One of the most creative ways I have seen people decorate their windows is by wrapping them up in wrapping paper. This makes them look like a little gift!

While this option doesn’t work for those who prefer to see out of their windows, it’s one of the most unique of the easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season that we have talked about.

The easiest way to accomplish this look is to tape the paper up to the inside of your window. That’s it.

What do you think of these easy ways to decorate your windows this holiday season? Can you think of any others to add to the list?

I don’t put up a Christmas tree in my apartment because it is so small there is no place for one. I do enjoy seeing Christmas decorations, especially traditional, colorful decor.

I don’t have the option of putting the tree in front of the window as it would block my desk where I have to work every day. Instead it goes in the corner of the living room and I can see it while I’m working.

We put our tree in the corner of our living room. It is not directly in front of a window, but it can be seen from the yard and street. I used to love decorating the tree a lot more when my girls were younger, but now my youngest (20) seems to have taken over decorating duty. She loves to decorate for the holidays!

I need a new artificial tree. We lost ours in a devastating fire in our apartment complex and I haven’t been able to replace it as I have had so much to replace. This year was a very sad Christmas, no tree, no lights. And what was worse, there is a family who sell live trees in front of our local Rite Aid Pharmacy (now a walgreens) they have been the same family selling there from Canada for over 40 years that I have lived in this neighborhood, they did not come this year! I was crestfallen! I can’t buy from them because of my asthma which is why I always go artificial, but they are just such a part of the fabric of my neighborhood that not seeing them this year made things feel even more bleak.

I have a wonderful collection of ornaments that have special meanings, and I enjoy reminiscing over them as I place them on the tree.

I always put my tree in the window, I always enjoy being able to see someone’s tree in their window when we drive around and look at Christmas lights. It makes the house look cozy. Sometimes I put window clings or the little battery operated candles in the window, but I always try to put my tree in front of the window and am a little sad if it doesn’t work for the house I live in.

I enjoy seeing lights during the holidays/Christmas. Several years back my upstairs had a full length window and I live right off the highway so it was visible to all traffic. I had 2 tomato cages so I decided to take one of them and bent the top into a point like a Christmas tree. I strung lights all over it and turned it on at night. No one would have guessed I used a tomato cafe but in that full length upstairs window it looked so pretty. Every year so many commented on how much they enjoyed my upstairs tree. Decorating gets me starting my projects for Christmas and helps me remember the true meaning of the season.
