Progressing in your career doesn’t have to be a challenge. It doesn’t have to be a lifelong goal and it doesn’t have to seem like an impossible task either.
Once you make a few simple changes, it’s more than possible for you to progress in your career quickly. You’d be surprised at how much of a difference this can make to your life.
If you have no clue how to advance your career, try adopting these habits:
Know your Mission
Your career mission is your job description. Those who are happiest in their job tend to have a good understanding of their work. They know what to do in order to get the job done well. Plus they have the technical expertise to make their job more efficient and they know exactly what the people they work with expect from them.
If you’re not 100% sure as to what your job contributes to, or why you are working for that company in the first place then this is part of why you haven’t progressed yet. How can you do the best job if you don’t actually understand the fundamentals of what you do?
Be More than Competent
Make sure the management team notices when you have done a good job. Employees often think that their employers notice every time they do something good but they don't. Employers are often too busy with their own jobs to notice everything you do. So if you want to get noticed then don’t be afraid to tell your employer what your career goals are.
If you are undergoing some kind of training or if you are choosing to study MBA online then make sure that they are aware of this so all of your achievements don’t get looked over the next time a promotion comes up.
Take some Risks
You will probably face a lot of risk with your own career development. Don’t waste your time hoping that you will get the best result out of any given situation by just sitting there. Make sure that you know how to advance your career and know what you have to do on a daily basis to achieve this.
If this means distancing yourself from a friend who is causing problems in the company or even people who don’t try as hard as you do then that’s what has to be done. You’ll never get anywhere if you don’t take any risks, so do keep that in mind.
Always Go with Your Gut Feeling
If a situation doesn’t feel right to you then there is a high chance that it isn’t. If you have ever taken a job, against your instincts, only to be proven right after a couple of weeks then you will know this more than anyone.
Do you have an idea or solution that will work for the company? Then don’t be afraid to put this forward. If someone tells you it isn’t good enough, don’t accept this, and go with your instincts. You may even end up bringing around a revolutionary and much-needed change.
I think it’s really important to challenge yourself and others in the workplace, and to take risks. Really what is there to lose, most places will appreciate you putting yourself out there.
I agree…taking some risks is important. Bosses like initiative too!
