5 Hair Care Mistakes to Avoid

There is something about having healthy hair that can make a person feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the world. That being said, there are so many hair products, appliances and practices out there that contribute to hair damage.

It’s essential to be aware of how the products you use daily can impact your hair’s health. Not to mention your physical health as an extension. Of course, everyone’s hair is different. All the more of a reason to be conscious of what you put in your hair. And, how you treat your hair.

Start forming healthier hair habits today! These are the main hair care mistakes people tend to make:

1: Neglecting Organic Hair Care Products

Organic hair products are gentler on your scalp and help to revive your hair’s health. Mainstream hair products, on the other hand, are packed with chemicals that irritate your scalp and skin and damage your hair.

It’s important to note that these chemicals can get into your body through your scalp and can cause long term health issues. It’s vital that you understand the impacts of the hair products you use daily and educate yourself on the value of utilizing products with natural ingredients.

2: Shampooing Every Day

Of course, clean hair is important — but most hairstylists will suggest that you wash your hair every other day, or even once a week depending on your hair type. Washing your hair often can cause it to get dry – and holding off on washing your hair will let natural oils add some necessary moisture to your hair.

In fact, Sally Hershberger, executive style director for John Frieda Sheer Blonde, told Good Housekeeping that hair tends to look its best when you let the natural oils from your scalp reach your ends.

Of course, you can always utilize products like dry shampoo if you need the extra moisture and hold when styling your hair in the morning.

3: Misusing Your Appliances

Have you walked out of the shower with your hair soaking wet only to instantly pick up your hairdryer to start drying it? Yeah, you should probably stop doing that. If you dry soaking wet hair you’ll only be drying it longer. It’s best to let your hair air dry a bit.

Other tips for proper appliance use are:

  • Blow-dry your hair with an attachment
  • Use a heat protector before applying direct heat to your hair
  • Straighten your hair on a higher setting, in smaller sections

4: Using Appliances Too Much

Using your hairdryer or straightening iron often can cause your hair to get dry and brittle faster. You also run the risk of burning your hair and causing long-term damage

Frequent use of heating appliances can also cause your hair to lose its natural body and volume. Try to use other styling methods like dry shampoo or updos to prevent daily use of these appliances.

5: Not Using the Right Brush

It’s important to be selective when it comes to choosing your hairbrush. Brushes with sharp or rough bristles can damage your hair by causing microtears. It’s better to opt for a brush with softer, wide-set bristles that will put less stress on your scalp and hair.

5 Hair Care Mistakes to Avoid

Take care of your hair! Making small changes at a time is the perfect way to instill some good hair-care habits that you’ll actually stick to.

I used to wash my hair everyday when I was a young adult. Now, I wash it every other day and it is less dry.
