How To Deal With Dog Shedding

Even though it is healthy for dogs to lose hair by shedding their coat, this can be a bit frustrating for pet owners who feel that all they do is vacuum up fluff from rugs, corners, and tiles.

The amount and frequency of hair they shed depends on many factors. However, if you are someone who has opted to groom your furry friend at home, here’s how you can control shedding significantly.

Dogs rid themselves of old or otherwise damaged hair by shedding it. Here are some tips to help them shed less! Click To Tweet

Consider seasonal shedding dog breeds

When choosing a dog breed, consider the needed at-home grooming methods, the money you’re willing to invest in professional grooming, and the allergies in your household.

It is essential to know that different breeds tend to shed at different rates and times throughout the year. In addition, some dogs only shed seasonally, be it spring or fall.

Moreover, some dogs shed all year long. Shedding is by far the messiest pet trait, especially for dogs.

Many dog owners think that hypoallergenic implies that a dog does not shed or cause allergic reactions. But, in reality, it simply means that they produce less dander.

Does dog shedding make you sneeze?

For some dog owners, spending time in the same room as their fluffy friends means runny noses and itchy eyes.

Even though some owners can alleviate the allergy symptoms through medication, many others can be significantly affected by skin reactions like hives and shortness of breath.

Furthermore, pet hair is not considered an allergen, but it can comprise dander, saliva, and urine. Consequently, all of these can cause allergic reactions.

How to Reduce Dog Shedding

No one wants tumbleweeds of dog fluff lying all around the floor. Fortunately, there are some things you can buy to help keep your furry friend’s coat from shedding.

Choose the right grooming brush.

The type of brush tends to depend on your dog’s coat. You may be required to brush your furry pal once a month or every day.

Some of the brush types are given below:

  • Wire Pin Brush – This brush is ideal for woolly, curly coats.
  • Bristle Brush – This is excellent for all coat types. However, you should utilize a brush with long and widely spaced bristles on canine friends with a longer coat.
  • Slicker Brush – This is valuable and helpful for removing tangles and mats.
  • Combs – One with rubber can massage your pal’s skin and remove dead hair.

Choose a dog shedding tool.

A shedding tool is quite pivotal, regardless if your canine friend sheds year-round or seasonally. Some of the shedding tools are specifically designed to fluff off dead hair.

These usually have stainless steel, closely-spaced tines that work effortlessly on eliminating the undercoat with serrated teeth.

Feed a healthy diet.

A dog that consumes a balanced and complete diet will ingest the nutrients and vitamins they require to keep hair follicles growing strong.

However, some dogs can benefit from consuming omega-3 fatty acids as well. These nutrients can promote healthy hair growth, heart, joint, and immune health.

Increase water intake.

Realizing how much water your dog is consuming can be pretty challenging. To take a note, keep a regular check on his water bowl.

The primary rule is to drink around an ounce of water for every pound of body weight every day. This simply implies that a ten-pound canine friend of yours requires just over a cup of water per day.

On the other hand, dehydrated skin is one of the significant causes of hair loss. This can increase the amount of fur you have to clean from your home’s floor.

De-shedding treatments and baths.

Bathing a dog can clean his coat and help remove dead hair simultaneously. In addition, de-shedding conditioners and shampoos are also up for grabs that contain omega fatty acids and moisturizers to hydrate your pup’s fur and skin to create more robust and healthier follicles.

It is essential to know that such conditioners and shampoos can help remove your puppy’s excess undercoat. In the end, grooming your dog with de-shedding tools and bathing regularly can considerably combat coat shedding.

Trying various dog shedding remedies can help you strengthen your bond

Trying some of these tips can help minimize your canine friend’s shedding and save you money and time in the long run. More importantly, while brushing your pal, consider doing an overall health checkup to observe any new lumps, cuts, parasites, or dry skin that needs to be treated by a veterinarian.

In concussion, grooming your dog can not only help keep his fur healthy but also allow both of you to have fun and develop a healthy bond.
