Here are some ways to enjoy your cup of coffee without your trusty coffee maker.
Brew Your Coffee on a Stovetop
Some people are old school. They want to make their coffee the traditional way.
For others, if your machine breaks or there is no power, you can brew coffee on a gas range.
What You Need
- Six ounces cold water
- One tablespoon of coffee
- Small saucepan
- Optional: Sugar and creamer
How to Brew
Bring to a boil the water and coffee in the saucepan over medium heat. Stir a few times while boiling for two minutes and switch off the stove and let it cool for four minutes.
Pour your coffee into your favorite cup. Add sugar and cream, if desired.
Faux French Press
You will enjoy the same results as you would using a French Press.
What You Need
- Six ounces water
- One tablespoon coffee
- Saucepan
- Deep bowl
- Spoon
- Optional: Sugar and creamer
How to Brew
Put the coffee in a deep bowl. Add a small amount of boiling water to saturate the coffee grounds. Press them using a spoon and pour the liquid into your cup.
Add the rest of the water into your cup.
Brew the Turkish Way
If you want a rich, foamy, and thick brew, you may want to try this Turkish method.
What You Need
- Six ounces cold water
- One tablespoon coffee
- Small saucepan
- Optional: Creamer and sugar
How to Brew
Heat the cold water and coffee in the saucepan over low heat. Remove the saucepan from heat when the water is about to boil. Skim off the foam and put it in your cup.
Reheat the saucepan and remove it once the water gets near the boiling point. Pour half of the coffee into your mug. Boil the remaining coffee for 15 seconds and pour it into your cup.
Wait for about three minutes to allow the beans to sink to the bottom. Brewing coffee beans at home can be a bit difficult, but there are some benefits to knowing how to do it. Once you purchase the fresh beans, you can prepare them for brewing and make them fit your taste buds best.

The Strainer Method
If your coffee maker breaks, and you want your dose of perk-me-up coffee, you do not need a quick trip to the grocery if you have a strainer.
What You Need
- Six ounces water
- One tablespoon coffee
- Saucepan
- Mesh strainer with tiny holes
- Optional: Sugar and cream
How to Brew
Boil the water and coffee grounds in a saucepan. Use the strainer to pour the coffee into your mug.
The Hanky Method
If you want something rustic and less expensive, you will like this environment-friendly brewing method.
What You Need
- Six ounces hot water
- One tablespoon coffee grounds
- Clothespins or binder paper clips
- Clean hanky or cheesecloth or linen
How to Brew
Put your hanky on top of your cup. Press lightly in the center to make space for the coffee grounds. Secure it with clothespins or binder clips.
Put the center and pour a little hot water. Let it seep into the coffee grounds for 30 seconds.
Pour the rest of the liquid slowly and ensure that the clips are steadfastly holding the hanky. Remove the hanky with the coffee grounds.
A Few Tips about Coffee
- Consume your coffee beans within two weeks after roasting to enjoy the best cup
- Grind only the beans that you will use for brewing
- Ensure that the water temperature is around 200° Fahrenheit or 93° Celsius
A broken coffee maker is not a reason for you not to enjoy your favorite perk-me-up coffee. Use any of the methods above every time you need a cup or two to get you going throughout your busy day.
