15-Mistakes-to-Avoid-While-Designing-and-Decorating-Your-Home

When you think of home, what images and scenes come to mind? What is your idea of a perfect space? Maybe it's cozy and comfortable, or perhaps it's modern and stylish. Whatever comes to mind when you envision the ideal place for yourself is sure to be different from someone else. The one idea that we can all agree on is that our homes are where we feel most at ease and comfortable. That being said, people could have easily avoided some common interior design mistakes people make in their decorating with just a bit more research!

If you are looking for ways to improve the look and feel of your home, you should avoid many mistakes. There is nothing worse than investing time and money into a new design only to realize it has fallen flat with your family members or friends. Avoid these common mistakes when designing and decorating your home to ensure a comfortable living space for all.

When it comes to curating a beautiful home, there are a lot of little things that have to come together to create the perfect space. Here are some common mistakes to avoid! Click To Tweet

Mistake # 1:: Using too many elements

The first mistake to avoid is going overboard with your design. While it may be tempting, having too many different items in the same room can lead to a chaotic and cluttered feeling. Keep things simple!

You don't have to go all out of your style if you are looking for an easier way to decorate that will turn out better.

Mistake # 2: Not understanding color themes

The second mistake to avoid is not paying attention to the colors you use in your decorating scheme.

If you want a calming and serene room, use soft blues and greens or other soothing color combinations like lavender with green accents. On the other side, if you want to create a more lively and playful feeling, use bright colors like yellow to liven up the space.

Paint the walls bright or place colorful and enchanting designed wool rugs to make the place cheerful and lively.

Mistake # 3: Not achieving balance

The third mistake to avoid is not paying attention to all your design elements in one room. Use balance when choosing items for a decorating scheme so that everything looks intentional rather than thrown together or having no connection.

When it comes to designing the perfect living space, a common misconception is that it's all about those big, statement pieces of furniture. But, in reality, it's often the more minor elements, like rugs and curtains, that can help balance and tie your house's design together. For example, using wool rugs for loft spaces or cowhides for vintage and rustic rooms will take your home design to the next level. Check out Cowhides Direct’s natural cowhides store is a great way to start exploring rugs and their maintenance tips.

So, these seemingly unimportant items play a crucial role in not only adding texture and color to your interiors but also help in defining the boundaries of different areas within a room, creating harmony and cohesion throughout your home. So next time you feel like freshening up your house, don't underestimate the transformative power of a new rug or a beautiful set of curtains.

This mistake to avoid is a little more complicated since it can be hard to see the forest full of trees when you are designing and decorating an entire home. Still, if all your design elements start looking like they have nothing to do with one another or there doesn't seem to be any order, this may not look intentional.

Mistake # 4: Avoiding color

The fourth mistake to avoid is not using enough color. We live in a society where people are so used to seeing the same colors over and over again that they don't notice them anymore.

Still, there are other ways of creating interest in your home's decorating scheme than just choosing one or two primary colors for all the furnishing, including area rugs and decor items.

Mistake # 5: Not having contrasting colors

Avoid painting your walls in a shade of white or cream if you don't have any furniture that will stand out against it. The lack of contrast on the wall might make it difficult to find anything in a room and look dirty with time and dust accumulation.

Use colors like pink or beige for a room with white or cream walls to make the colors pop.

Mistake # 6: One of the most common interior design problems is blocking windows

Avoid having furniture that blocks too much of your view. If you can't see what's going on outside, it may feel more like a cell than home.

Avoid distracting yourself by keeping clutter and windows clear to avoid a heavy feel.

Mistake # 7: Using too many or not enough mirrors

Use antique mirrors to reflect natural light. Mirrors will brighten up your decor and space, giving it an illusion of more size than the actual area. This is perfect for smaller spaces that need some visual interest but don't want to invest in expensive artwork or furniture.

Just don't overdo it with mirrors.

Mistake # 8: Having the right amount of greenery

Don't forget to think about plants. Plants in a living space make it feel more like home, but they also improve the air quality and provide natural light (which is reflected by mirrors).

Also, because we live in nature, animals such as birds will be attracted to your window sill too!

But avoid using too many big plants indoors. Opt for small plant pots and a green area rug on the patio if you don't have enough space for the garden.

Mistake # 9: Lacking storage

Don't forget to think about storage. Find out what you need and buy it before your house is full of stuff you will never use again!

Storage and shelves keep your home organized and clean.

Mistake # 10: Forgetting outdoor spaces

Don't ignore the patio and outdoors. Patio design is an art form that takes time and patience.

It would be best if you had a good plan before starting a project because it's really important for the patio to be in harmony with the interior of your home. Get outdoor and backyard decor ideas from “5 DIY design tips that you can use to upgrade your home decor“.

Mistake # 11: Decorating mistakes that date your home are using too many patterns

Don't use too many patterns on furniture or other surfaces. The best approach for a better design is to mix and match different colors instead, adding décor such as flowers for a fresh look!

Mixing textures also adds interest and makes it more pleasant visually.

Mistake # 12: One of the worst interior design mistakes is neglecting the lighting in a room

Don't forget to think about lighting. Lighting with dimmer switches will help you set the mood when entertaining guests at night.

This is a huge consideration for people who want to make their outdoor space an extension of their living area, and it can also be used as a great way to create ambiance and set the mood.

Mistake # 13: Forgetting about guests

Don't forget a space for guests. If there's one thing that all designers agree on is unannounced visits from friends and family.

Ensure to create an area within your home designated for guests, including a guest room or sofa bed, and keep in mind extras like towels and toiletries.

Mistake # 14: Using the wrong furniture

Don't forget to use the right furniture for the space. If your living room is also a playroom, make sure that you choose pieces of furniture that can withstand wear and tear from children's activities, like crayons or markers.

Mistake # 15: Interior design mistakes to avoid is using one color palette

Avoid using the same colors in every room of your house. Try different colors and themes and match colors in other rooms. Use a color theory to choose complementary or contrasting shades of the same color.

Avoid designing a space with interior décor in the same color tone, as it will look awkward and unpleasant to the eye. Also, don't put the same design and pattern rugs in every room.

Play with colors and patterns for an artistic and beautiful look. You can get every color and design of rugs from RugKnots (an online rug store in the USA).

Wrapping Up

Please read our article and avoid these common decorating mistakes to have an inviting home. The final step in the design process is choosing furniture, light fixtures, rugs, and artwork for your space.

So what's the most important thing you should consider? Comfort!

You can ruin a beautiful room if it doesn't provide a respite from hectic schedules. Make sure that there are ample areas to sit or lounge and enough seating at dinner time so that everyone has a place to call their own with minimal effort on your part!
