house cover in snow with text that says 10 Must-Have Items to Prepare Your Home for a Winter Storm

Winter is coming, and it is important to be prepared for it. The right preparation can make all the difference when a storm hits! It's not just about grabbing some extra food and water – there are plenty of things you can do both inside and outside your home to prepare for a lingering snow day. In this blog post, we will go over ten items that every family should have on hand at all times, just in case.

If you're not prepared with the right items, things can get pretty ugly when a winter storm hits. Thankfully there are plenty of things we can do both inside and outside our homes to prepare for them! Click To Tweet

LED Lanterns and Headlamps

One of the most important things you can have during a winter storm is light. When the power goes out, it can be tough to see anything in your home at night.

That's why having LED lanterns and headlamps on hand is so important. They will provide you with plenty of light both indoors and outdoors, and they use very little energy, which is great when the power is out.

One of our favorite brands for this kind of lighting source is Vont. They offer quality yet affordable LED lanterns and headlamps perfect for winter emergencies and power outages.

Vont LED Headlamps

When your power has been out a while, and it's dark, holding a flashlight gets old quickly. These headlamps light up your immediate vicinity and allow you to keep your hands free. Being hands-free can be very important when you have no other light source, and you want to do things like eat or go to the bathroom.

We found Vont headlamps extraordinarily bright and love how you can tilt them for the perfect angle. In addition, the red sidelights and having several light modes, particularly the strobe, can be extremely useful outside during a winter storm emergency.

Vont LED Lanterns

These bad boys are a combination of a lantern and a flashlight in one. Collapsed, it's a flashlight and extended, it's a lantern – it's the best of both worlds and is a must for power outages.

These Vont LED lanterns offer a 16-hour run time and have hooks that you can prop or hang the light as you see fit. We particularly love the magnetic base that allows it to stick to metal surfaces and has red flashing lights for an emergency.

Candles

Another way to get some light during a winter storm is by using candles. Candles are great because they don't require any electricity, and they can provide a lot of warmth too.

Just make sure that you always use them safely – never leave a candle burning unattended!

Battery Backups

If the power goes out during a winter storm, you're going to want to have some battery backups on hand. That way, you can still use your electronic devices even when the power is out.

It's a good idea to keep at least one backup for each device you own and ensure they are all fully charged before a storm hits.

Extra Batteries

Besides having battery backups, it's also essential to have extra batteries on hand. That way, if your backups die or you run out of power, you can continue using your battery devices.

Just make sure that the batteries are compatible with the devices you own!

Power Generator

If the power goes out for an extended time during a winter storm, you're going to want to have a generator on hand. That way, you can continue using your devices and heaters while the power is out.

A generator will be able to supply you with plenty of electric energy if it's needed!

Extra Blankets

Even when the electricity goes out during a winter storm, there are still some ways that you can stay warm. One of the best ways is by using extra blankets.

Just make sure that you have enough for everyone in your family, and keep them in an easily accessible place so that you can grab them when needed.

Also, having a few sleeping bags on hand couldn't hurt.

Kerosene Heater

One of the best ways to stay warm during a winter storm is by using a kerosene heater. Many people forget about these, but they can provide you with plenty of warmth and light – especially if the electricity goes out!

However, make sure that it's always used safely because some risks are involved. It should also be kept far away from anything flammable or combustible at all times!

Grill or Propane Stove

If the power does go out for an extended period, you're going to want to have a grill or propane stove on hand. That way, you can still cook food and stay warm.

Just make sure that you have plenty of propane or charcoal for the grill and that the stove is in a safe place away from anything flammable.

Extra Food and Water

Of course, one of the most important things you can do to prepare for a winter storm is to stock up on extra food and water.

Make sure that you have enough supplies to last for at least a few days, just in case the power goes out and you can't leave your home.

This way, you won't have to worry about going hungry or thirsty during a winter storm!

Plus, extra water comes in handy if your plumbing stops working too.

Full Tank of Gas

One of the most important things to do before a winter storm hits is to make sure that you have a full gas tank.

That way, if the power goes out and your heater stops working (which can happen very easily during cold weather), you'll be able to keep warm from time to time.

Also, having extra fuel on hand for emergencies will help ensure that you get where you need to go when the roads are slick with snow or ice.

In addition, you can use your car as a power source to charge things like your cell phone. So, make sure all your cars have a cell phone charger before a storm hits.

Conclusion

Preparing for a winter storm at home can be difficult, but it's definitely possible. By following the tips in this post, you'll be able to make sure that you and your family are safe and warm during even the worst winter storm.

Make sure to keep these items in mind as we move into the colder months! Stay safe out there! 🙂
