When my kids get home from school they are often STARVING. At school they both eat before noon, my youngest has lunchtime still in the 10 o' clock hour. Craziness! I don't even feel like I'm fully awake at that time let alone ready for lunch but what can you do. So when they get home from school they have some sort of snack. It's usually simple things like cereal, oatmeal, toast with Nutella, and here lately we've been making smoothies. As you can tell we are big breakfast fans in this house!
A few weeks ago I made some Homemade Blueberry Veggie Applesauce. We had a ton of it so I decided to freeze the extra. I spooned some into silicone baking cups and froze them. Once they were frozen I popped out my little “applesauce muffins” and stored in a ziplock baggie in the freezer.
So now anytime I want to add some hidden veggies to my smoothies I grab one of these out of the freezer. I always have little eyes watching me and saying “What's that?”. They think these look like big Reece cups. I just smile and toss it in. Otherwise, they wouldn't even try it if they saw me putting anything green into the blender. Doing this also helps eliminate the need for ice and dilution.
This blueberry applesauce smoothie is just the right consistency, not too runny. Our favorite way to drink them is through these colorful Jumbo Silicone Drinking Straws. They are the perfect size for smoothies and milkshakes. I hate trying to suck things through tiny little straws. My face turns blue and I get a headache with very little in return (Well, if you don't count pain!). I end up having to wait for my milkshake or smoothie to thaw a bit before I can drink it. It can be a drag especially for kids with little to no patience. Not a problem with these huge straws! The best part is that they are reusable and dishwasher safe. My kids LOVE them! Mommy approved too!!
The kids request this No Sugar Blueberry Applesauce Smoothie several times a week. I just toss everything into the blender and they have a filling snack in no time. Then it's off to their chores they go.
