The reason many people love evergreen shrubs in their yards is that they are easy to live with. Also, they provide a different visual depending on the season that you have at the time. During winter, they are a postcard scene with snow on them. While in the summer, they act as backdrops to your entire landscape.
They beautify your yard all year long hence why they are considered an excellent investment. There are many types of evergreen shrubs that you can choose for your yard. However, they have many similarities, and any you prefer over the other will still be a great choice. Below are more reasons to plant an evergreen shrub in your yard.
They stay green
Firstly, just as the name suggests, these shrubs remain green no matter the season.
To maintain its green nature, they shed leaves regularly throughout the year to bring out new green leaves. Although in winter, the color fades slightly, the overall visual effect is still green.
However, other evergreen shrubs like boxwood do not shed by themselves. To stop its growth and maintain its look, it requires regular trimming. It is also a popular shrub among gardeners as you can cut them into fun shapes to beautify your landscape. You can also plant it where it grows free with no trimming.
Blocks wind
Whether you plant your evergreen shrubs alone or with other ornamental shrubs. They both help block the wind efficiently due to their density. The ornamental shrubs help create a contrasting visual effect and also add to the density of the evergreen backdrop.
Pairing the two can make them act as windbreakers while at the same time beautifying your garden.
They will not only help protect you from the harshness of the winter weather, but it protects other plants, buildings, and the house as well. Consider having two rows of evergreen shrubs and one of the ornamental as you deem fit.
Muffles noise
If you are living next to a busy highway, airport, or near a busy sidewalk, the type of evergreen shrub you choose is very important. Although most of them offer coverage to protect your privacy, consider a type that helps deaden the outside sounds and noises too.
They help absorb street noise so you cannot hear it as clearly. Also, if you plant it, for this reason, try to add a row at the front of your property to set it apart from the street.
Purifies the air and smells good
This is a great reason to plant more evergreen shrubs in your landscape. Since they are a benefit to the environment as they clean the air by taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen to boost plant growth.
As a result, we breathe in oxygen and release carbon dioxide, which is beneficial to our health and growth. That acts as a silent partnership between the evergreens and us.
Plus, they have a pleasant scent, though not all of them but some such as the Pine. During winter, others like the conifers have a more noticeable scent, unlike other plants that are dormant during this season.
Provides shade and screen views
Some evergreen shrubs like the Arborvitae is one great shade provider. As long as it is planted away from power lines and the house to grow to its maximum potential. It becomes tall and wide; hence it provides shade from top to bottom.
Not forgetting that evergreens help absorb the heat to provide a cooling shadow. Also, they are perfect screen views that give you little or no view of your next-door neighbor or the street. This helps to provide you with privacy from strangers and neighbors and gives you a sense of security.
Hence, surround your patio and pool area with these evergreen shrubs to create a private space for yourself and your family.
Great for decorations
Whenever you need greenery for any form of decorations the evergreen shrub provides it for you all year long. This is for different flower creations like wreaths and additions to flower vases, among others.
However, it is important to cut them the right way to make them last longer. Always put cut greenery in water until you are able to use them. As you place them in various arrangements, it is best to cut the end at an angle just as you would any other plant. This helps them absorb water better.
Food and cover for birds
When you have an evergreen leafy shrub in your yard, birds can hide with ease from predators. Also, it is a safe place for them to build their nests when the bush is grown above the ground during the summer. Evergreens like conifers have cones with seeds that birds eat while staying under their cover. Others like holly have berries that the birds can eat as well.
In summary, evergreen shrubs play many roles in your home compound. Hence the reason to have at least two or three depending on the size of your yard. Happy planting!
The visual effect of evergreen shrubs is undeniable. I never thought of the other benefits you talk about in this post. Thanks for sharing!
We are happy to hear we taught you something about evergreen shrubs
These are all great reasons to plant evergreens. I love the scent of them!
The evergreen scent reminds me of winter
I do like evergreens. I would add one thing, though: don’t plant them too close to the front porch (or anywhere you might sit outside.) We had some around our porch at our last house and they were bug magnets, lol. You couldn’t sit on the porch because of the bugs. These were a kind of evergreen I’m not nuts about to begin with, they had those really prickly needles and hard, almost dangerous branches.
Thanks for the tip on evergreens. No one wants bugs crawling all over them!
