A Post Office Guide: How Many Stamps Do I Need?

In today’s digital age and the rise of new technology, most people send important messages online, such as electronic mail (e-mail), chatting applications, and more instead of using postage and physical letters.

Because of these technological advancements, most people rarely use postal services to send important letters or delicate packages. Also, they don’t even know how the entire mailing processes work, especially the younger generations. They don’t know how special it is to receive a handwritten note from the person you cherish the most.

Since most people don’t know how postages work, they are usually curious about how many stamps they need. The number of stamps you’ll need will depend on your letter or package’s size, weight, and type of stamp. You may check the USPS stamp guide to determine what you need.

But before anything else, you might need to learn the basics that will help you understand everything about postal services. These include the different types of stamps, international mailing, and more.

Wondering how many stamps you need for your letter or package? Check out our guide to learn everything about using stamps! Click To Tweet

What Are The Different Types Of Stamps?

Stamps are an indication that postage has already been paid and is ready for postal delivery services. Others include meter stamps (the one with circle and square symbols) and handstamps. However, these two are no longer in circulation and have already been replaced by adhesive stamps people know and collect today.

In addition, here are the common types of stamps that might affect the number of stamps you need for your postage:

Definitive Stamps

These are the most common stamps and are used in everyday postal services. Also, they can come in various denominations, depending on what you plan to send. In addition, they are mass-produced infinitely every year, unlike the commemorative ones, which we will discuss later in this article.

In terms of their appearance, there’s nothing special about them. It only includes what you can see in a standard stamp, such as species of animals, presidents, and other daily objects.

Commemorative Stamps

These are the opposite of definitive stamps when it comes to production. Unlike the definitive stamps that can be produced infinitely, commemorative stamps are created as limited editions and only used on special occasions that need to be highlighted, such as national events and influential people.

Also, these stamps are usually reserved for collectors, but you can still use them in standard postages.

Forever Stamps

These are non-denominated stamps and the newest type of stamps. Forever stamps were only released in 2007, unlike the standard definitive stamps that appeared in the 19th century. As the name suggests, you can use these stamps as long as they are still intact and readable.

In addition, forever stamps are used for standard letter envelopes not weighing greater than an ounce. Moreover, their price will never change forever. For example, a forever stamp you purchased today at 45 cents will stay as is, even if the price of forever stamps became 60 cents after three years.

Semi-Postal Stamps

These are also known as fund-raising stamps and have the same price as first-class definitive stamps, but they can be more expensive. However, the extra cost you pay will go to charity. Every time the U.S Postal Services release an issue, each has a single purpose: to raise money for the needy.

Some charities that have received additional from these stamps are research facilities for breast cancer patients, the foundation that stops family violence, and many more.

How Many Stamps Do You Need?

To determine the number of stamps you need, you might need to consider the type of postage you plan to send. These are first-class postage, postcards, and large-flat envelopes. Each has a different number of required stamps and prices:

Postcards

These are less expensive than first-class postage, costing only 0.35 cents per postcard. However, it has a specific size requirement, and anything larger than this will require additional costs. Moreover, the required postcard size can go up to six by 4.25 inches. Since postcards from different countries have different sizes, you might need to pay more.

In addition, all non-standard postcards, such as wedding invitations, birthday cards, thank you cards, and more, are required to have a first-class postage stamp. Also, there are instances when people want to send an odd-shaped postcard. In this case, they’ll most likely pay costs higher than one first-class stamp.

First-Class Postage

This is what most people usually use. It has a base price of $0.55 to cover one ounce of its weight and an additional $0.15, depending on the weight of your letter. So, if your letter weighs five ounces, the total amount you need to pay is $1.30.

In addition, you can put as many stamps as you want; this will cover more weight to be careful.

Large Flat Envelopes

If you’re planning to send envelopes larger than 15 inches, you might need to go to the post office because these are already classified as a package. Also, you might need to pay around $3 for these packages.

However, if your package weighs more than 19 ounces, you may upgrade it to Priority Mail for faster delivery services. Also, the price will depend based on its weight.

In addition, if you’re planning to send documents, keep in mind that everything inside the package will be included in the computation, such as clips.

How Many Stamps Do You Need For International Mailing?

Another thing you need to consider is the location where you plan to send your postages. Keep in mind that standard stamps will not work on international mailing services. Instead, you might need to buy an international or global stamp for mail delivered outside the U.S.

Usually, you will be required to pay at least three times the price of U.S stamps. However, the price of stamps will remain the same, even if you send them on the opposite side of the world.

Final Words

Even if the world continues to change digitally, the purpose of stamps and postal services will still remain beneficial to some people. These people want to experience the special connection and feeling created by writing and sending physical letters.

However, you will need stamps to send your mail. You may use this article to determine how many stamps you need, or you may contact USPS for more details, especially if you have complicated packages, such as odd-shaped letters and documents.

Furthermore, sending postal mail is easy to do. All you need is a little practice, and you’ll master it in no time.

Do you know how much a forever stamp is worth?

Very helpful post, thanks for sharing! I know a lot of us don’t use stamps very often anymore, but back in the day they were a necessity! I prefer getting the forever stamps, so I never have to worry about them expiring.
