Make a list and stick to it

Healthy food shopping on a budget is all about planning and discipline.

First, you need to take the time to sit down and make a list of everything you need. Once you have your list, stick to it. That means resisting the temptation to add items you don't really need, no matter how good they look. This can be tough, but it's essential if you want to stay within your budget.

By being strategic and sticking to your list, you can save a lot of money on groceries without sacrificing your healthy eating habits.

Compare prices

When you're at the store, it's important to compare prices to find the best deals. This can be a bit time-consuming, but it's worth it if it means saving money.

Take a look at the sale flyers to see what's on special and check the unit price of items to see which option is cheaper.

Shop the perimeter

The outer edges of the grocery store are typically where you'll find the freshest and healthiest food. This is because the inner aisles are usually stocked with processed foods that are high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.

So, when you're food shopping, be sure to stick to the perimeter of the store. This will help you fill your cart with healthy and affordable options.

Buy in bulk

If you have the storage space, buying in bulk can be a great way to save money on groceries. This is especially true for foods that you use often and don't mind stocking up on, like canned goods, dry goods, and spices.

Just be sure to only buy what you'll actually use so that nothing goes to waste.

Buy frozen vegetables and fruits

Frozen fruits and vegetables are a great buy for your wallet. They're typically cheaper than fresh produce and have a longer shelf life.

Plus, they're just as healthy as fresh ones. So, if you're looking to save some money, stock up on frozen fruits and vegetables instead of fresh ones.

Make your own meals

Eating out can be costly, so budget-friendly shoppers typically cook most of their meals at home. This doesn't mean you have to spend hours in the kitchen every day. There are plenty of quick and easy recipes that you can whip up in no time.

And by cooking at home, you'll save a lot of money compared to eating out.

Meal plan

Not only is meal planning a fantastic method of budgeting, but it's also great for your health. By arranging your meals ahead of time, you can avoid wasting ingredients and prioritize healthier options. This prevents food from going bad and minimizes waste.

Plus, it helps you stay organized and stick to your budget.

Buy meat with skin and bone

Buying meat with skin and bone is a great way to save money. You can use the bones to make broth or stock, and the skin can be used to make delicious fried chicken or roasted potatoes.

Plus, meat with skin and bone is usually cheaper than boneless, skinless options. So, if you're looking to save money, buy meat with skin and bone.

Following these budget-friendly food shopping tips can save money on groceries without sacrificing your healthy eating habits. So, next time you're at the store, keep these tips in mind and see how much you can save.

It’s very hard now to save on food (or anything else). Sadly, I’m in a small apartment and can’t buy in bulk. I do stick to my list and never shop when I’m hungry, that helps.

These are great tips! We do most of these, although we don’t buy that kind of meat because we’re a vegetarian family so it doesn’t really apply, and we do buy some things from the middle aisles still. Trying to get away from those though!
