Screen-Free Summer: 7 Creative Ways to Keep Your Family Entertained

Are you tired of everyone in your family being glued to their screens all summer long? It’s time to shake things up and enjoy some quality time together without the distractions of technology.

In this article, we’ll explore 7 creative ways to keep your family entertained during a screen-free summer. From DIY backyard games to a family cooking challenge, these activities will bring your loved ones closer and create lasting memories. So, put down your devices and get ready to have some fun together!

DIY Backyard Games

This summer, why not add some excitement to your family gatherings by designing and building your very own do-it-yourself (DIY) backyard games?

You can go for timeless favorites such as cornhole and Giant Jenga or get creative with unique games like a color-coded water balloon toss. There are countless options to ensure that everyone can join in the fun and make the most of the beautiful weather.

Go Screen-Free With a Family Cooking Challenge

To continue the summer fun, get ready to embark on a Family Cooking Challenge that will not only bring everyone together but also spark some friendly competition in the kitchen.

Challenge each family member to come up with a unique dish using a secret ingredient or theme, then have a taste test to determine the winner. This activity is a great way to bond over food and unleash everyone’s creativity.

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Venture into the great outdoors with a Nature Scavenger Hunt, a fun and educational activity that will keep your family entertained for hours.

Create a list of items found in nature, such as pinecones, wildflowers, or a specific type of bird, and challenge your family to find them all. This scavenger hunt will not only encourage teamwork and communication but also allow everyone to appreciate the beauty of the natural world around them.

Play What’s Next? A Life-Size Game

Instead of playing a regular old board game, why not play a game where you are the game piece?

M&J Games‘ “What’s Next? A Life-Size Game” features large foam tiles that you place on the floor, along with soft jumbo dice. Roll the dice, move the corresponding number of spaces, and follow the instructions on the tiles to perform a fun, silly, or humorous activity. This interactive game is designed to get everyone moving and laughing together, creating unforgettable memories.

I mean, who doesn’t love throwing a huge dice?

This game is perfect for the whole family, as long as you don’t mind silly things like farting or butt dancing. If those things bother you, you can easily remove them from the set or change the tiles to something you find more appropriate.

We think this makes a great outdoor game since it can take up quite a bit of space. The white tiles may get a bit dirty, but we enjoy being out in the fresh air. A mixture of vinegar and water seems to clean them well, or you can use a sanitizing wipe in a pinch.

Agewise, we believe it’s suitable for early readers, around 4-6 years old. It helps enhance their reading skills by following the directions on the tiles, as well as their math skills as they lay out the tiles on the ground.

The game can be played with two players, but it’s even more entertaining with four. Having more players adds variety to the game. With two players, the games usually last about 10-15 minutes, but with four players, they can go on for up to 20-30 minutes.

Additionally, the game comes with a convenient mesh bag to help you keep everything organized once you’re done playing.

We love that this game allows kids to be kids and not glued to screens, providing a great way to enjoy the summer!

Screen-Free Storytelling Nights

For Storytelling Nights, gather your family under the stars for a cozy evening of sharing tales and creating memories together. Encourage each person to take turns spinning a yarn or sharing a favorite story, whether it’s a childhood memory, a spooky ghost tale, or a funny anecdote.

The warmth of the fire and the twinkling of the night sky will set the perfect atmosphere for bonding and laughter.

No Screens Arts and Crafts Day

On Arts and Crafts Day, let your family’s creativity run wild with various projects and activities. From painting and drawing to DIY projects and homemade decorations, there are endless possibilities to explore.

Get everyone involved in a collaborative art piece or challenge each other to a friendly competition. Whatever you choose to create, the important thing is to have fun and enjoy the process of making something together.

Family Talent Show

Whether you have singers, dancers, magicians, or comedians in your family, a Family Talent Show is a fun and entertaining way to showcase everyone’s skills. Encourage each family member to come up with a unique act or performance to share with the rest of the group.

Set up a stage area in your living room or backyard, complete with a makeshift spotlight and some props to enhance the performances. Not only will the Family Talent Show provide a platform for everyone to express themselves creatively, but it will also create lasting memories that you can look back on and cherish for years to come.

After all the acts have been performed, award prizes for different categories such as ‘Most Creative’, ‘Most Entertaining’, or ‘Most Original’. Get ready to be amazed by the talents within your own family and enjoy a night filled with laughter, applause, and appreciation.

Final Thoughts

In a world filled with screens and constant distractions, a screen-free summer offers a refreshing opportunity to connect with your family in meaningful ways. Take the first step towards reducing screen time and fostering genuine relationships within your household.

We enjoy turning off screens and taking walks or going to the park and playing basketball or soccer.

My favorite thing to do screen-free for sure is to play charades with my 4-year-old. He is absolutely hilarious when he acts out certain things, and it is a blast every single time!

I’m old enough that I grew up doing things without screens, so I have hobbies I enjoy that include reading and making jewelry.
