Selecting a Door for Your House_ Things to Keep in Mind

When building a house, a lot of attention is usually focused on the floor plan, fixtures, the sizes of the windows, and the rooms. Rarely do people ever take their time to think of the doors that will be part of the house. For most people, the door is the last thing they think of after finalizing everything.

And although that’s perfectly okay, the ability to think of the kind of door you want early on will help you come up with a suitable interior decor design. The following are some of the things you have to consider when selecting a door for your home.

Your front door is the first impression of your home - make it a good one with these tips!Click To Tweet

The Style

Doors, like the interior of the house, have style, and that should be in line with the style you chose for the home.

You don’t want to have a modern-looking door in a house that’s built in the Victoria-era castle style. This level of disconnect is what makes some beautifully designed homes look ordinary and out of place.

The door being the first thing that people see, should be like an introduction to what is expected once someone crosses the hallway. Therefore, consider the style of the house when selecting the main door so that everything has a cohesive feel.

The Material

The longevity of the door and its ability to stop people from entering the house without permission are determined by the material used to build them.

Metal doors are heavier and more secure but are very expensive, and many people find them to be a little traditional for any modern house.

The most common materials used to create doors are hardwood. Some can be expensive, managing them is much easier, and you can even add your own customizations to them.

Wood doors are especially very popular with people who live in apartments, while aluminum doors are most likely to be found in individual houses.

The Cost

You can only get what you can afford, and good doors don’t come cheap. The best wooden doors are made using hardwoods like mahogany, maple, and oak.

Depending on the size, you may have to fork out a substantial amount of money to get the best fit for your house. You could go for cheaper versions like pine, but they may not serve you as well as the high-end ones.

Durability also plays a massive part in determining the price, which should be factored into your budget.

Security

You also have to consider the state of security in your neighborhood. There are places that need a heavy door to stop people from breaking in. In these situations, you may have to go with metal since they cannot be broken easily.

If you are in a neighborhood that has good security, you will have more freedom to go with stylish door designs that don’t focus too much on security but more on aesthetics.

If security is an issue, you may have to install other deterrence like electric fences, security cameras, and security lights from the most reliable LED light manufacturer around. Being prepared in advance has never hurt anyone.

Size and Color

The size of the house determines the size of the door. People make the mistake of assuming that there’s a standard size for doors when in reality, they come in varying sizes. Bigger doors are always better, but they should not end up being as big as those found in churches.

At the same time, you have to consider the color. You are free to go with any color you like. However. most people go with neutral colors like blacks, whites, and greys. Rarely do people go with bright colors like yellow as they tend to fade quickly when hit with direct sunlight.

When choosing colors, go with something that doesn’t show dirt or dust easily to reduce cleaning. For the best result, always go for contrast; if the interior of your house is black, go for a white door and vice versa. That contrast will add to the aesthetic aspect of the entire place.

Conclusion

Doors are a statement, they communicate what the interior of the house is all about. A single look is all it takes for someone to tell if they are walking into a classy home or an ordinary one.

When setting up your house, don’t neglect the door. It should be one of the first things that should cross your mind as the construction progresses.

Have you ever thought about switching out your plain interior doors?

Very true – even though most people don’t put too much thought into the doors they select.
