The first day of school will be here before you know it. A lot of parents like to help out their child's teacher by becoming a parent volunteer. It keeps you close to your kids and you get to be involved with your kid's education. It's a win, win.
Your job will be to support the teacher in any classroom duties she needs help with. These duties can vary greatly but most often include soliciting donations from parents for the classroom and parties. The back to school season is the perfect time to stock up for your classroom mom duties, here's why:
Lower Prices
Typically, starting around July and continuing through September school supply deals are everywhere. Name brand boxes of crayons, folders, and other supplies can often be found for 50 cents or less.
You know school supplies dwindle as the year goes on and you'll be asked to pitch in. Stock up now while prices are at their lowest!
Set an Example
School supplies are obviously being constantly used (and that's a good thing) but as the storage gets depleted teachers are often responsible to fill in the gaps out of their own pockets. As you can imagine, that can really add up.
Classroom moms try to get donations from parents to help with parties, birthdays, performances, and just the regular classroom essentials. One of the best ways to show Teacher Appreciation is to donate to your child's classroom.
Teachers want your kids to feel special and have everything they need to succeed even if it means spending their own money.
As a classroom mom, other parents look to you for guidance. Set an example by buying extra school supplies to support the teacher and show you care too!
Prepare for All Those Germs
School germs are inevitable. It's going to happen and you know it. Be prepared by stocking up on Member’s Mark Brand 2-ply Facial Tissue, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting cleaning wipes.

NOT a parent so no I have not. I have teacher friends that I give money to each year for their class room
It sounds like you have some pretty awesome friends
I can’t believe it is almost back to school time again! It’s always good to be prepared makes it less stressful
Yes, I couldn’t agree more. Prepping is key
I was the Room Mother for all 3 of my boys for 2 years. I did it for all of their 1st and 2nd grades.
I bet your kids enjoyed that
I used to volunteer when my boys were in school. I really haven’t done this with my grandchildren but maybe when I retire. I try to help out in other ways when I can. The teachers work so hard and I appreciate each and every one of them. Thank you for sharing
I’m so happy to hear that you regularly help out teachers
no i dont do classrooms. way to many kids
Haha yes classrooms do have a lot of kids
I am a classroom parent this year and have been for the last couple of years. I enjoy it so much and it makes me feel like I am helping.
You are helping and the teachers appreciate it so much
When my boys were young I did this but I haven’t for my grandchildren. I really enjoyed this article. Thank you so much for sharing this.
I’m sure your boys loved seeing you at school when they were little
This is great. I have never been a classroom parent, but as a teacher, I greatly appreciate this advice for parents. I hope to be able to support my kid’s teachers when they get to school.
Thank you for teaching our kids. We couldn’t do it without you.
I’ve been tossing the idea around of getting a Sam’s membership & this post is really making me want to just take the plunge. We go through a ridiculous amount of tissues in my house, especially at the start of the school year when it seems that every classroom needs 20 boxes.
We love having a Sam’s Club membership
We should all have two identical sets of these supplies. One for home and one for school.
That’s a really good idea!
I get so many supplies for my children’s teacher at Sam’s Club. They are so appreciative.
I love buying in bulk especially things that we use all the time
I always stock up on tissues and wipes when back to school time ends, and they are on sale. Then I stock up on things like Pirate’s Booty after Halloween. Goldfish after Easter. I use them for school snacks, and sport snacks.
That’s a great way to stock up on things
My parents were classroom parents. I always said I would be the same. My child is homeschooled for now so I suppose that technically counts lol!
Haha yes you are the classroom parent and the teacher
My kids are all grown and the school days behind us. I never was a classroom parent.
Not everyone has the time to be a classroom.
great tips they allways help out and teach me more to help in the long run.
The more help the better
Great tips! I’m not a classroom mom anymore, but I used to be when my boys were a bit younger. Kids are soooo much fun!
I bet your boys loved when you helped out
I’m not a classroom parent. I’m sure the teachers really appreciate the help though.
Yes teachers need all the help they can get
I have been a classroom parent and now I am a classroom grandparent. Things have changed a LOT
That’s so great to hear that you’ve been a classroom parent for both your kids and your grandchildren
YES, i HAVE BEEN A CLASSROOM DAD AND IT DID HAVE IT’S CHALLENGES…..TISSUES WERE ALWAYS A PART OF MY TOOLKIT 🙂
That’s awesome! You don’t see too many dad’s being classroom parents
We always have tissues here, also softsoap. We get these from Dollar Tree.
So glad to hear you stock up on tissues
I think it’s awful that Classroom moms and teachers have to pay for this stuff out of pocket. Your savings tips are awesome! Maybe more parents should check with teachers and help with supplies. I am retired and my daughter is 45 and has no kids (other than fur babies) so this is not an issue for me
It is sad that they have to pay money out of their own pockets. You would think there would be a. bigger budget for that
I’ve never had kids. So I’ve never been a classroom mom.
Ah, that’s okay! If you want you could volunteer for other organizations. There are a lot that always need help
No, and thankfully my daughter and grandson are both done with school. I don’t think we had classroom parents when my daughter was in school anyway.
That’s okay. Not everyone has the time to be a classroom parent
Great advice. I usually have tissues and cleaning wipes on hand for the school.
Teachers could always use those products
I have never helped in a class. I always try to volunteer for scfool projects as much as possible.
I’m sure your kids appreciate you helping with school projects
I am not a parent but I have been the substitute parent for my nieces and nephews at times when it was needed at their schools.
That’s really sweet of you to sub for your siblings
I’ve never been a classroom parent but my mom ran a preschool in our home while I was in college, so I helped in there a lot. Thanks for sharing.
I think that totally counts!
Unfortunately I can’t have chil so no I have never been in that classroom situation. My friends children and I are close so I did get to experience some of his classroom ordeals. They are really strict now though so it’s harder. This is great
That’s great you’ve been able to help your friends kids
Years ago I used to volunteer for my oldest son’s classes. Now, I am a homeschool mom so I do all this by myself.
That’s awesome you are a home school mom! I admire you 🙂
We always have tissues around the house, especially in the Winter! Allergies are bad here. I think disinfectant wipes are a must in school too, helps reduce the amount of germs spread!
I know what you mean – my house is full of tissues and disinfecting wipes/spray.
Yes I am a classroom parent. I help as much as possible every little bit helps easy students that does not have things. I try to buy in bulk, pencils, paper and dry erase markers extra helps
So glad to hear you’re a classroom parent!!
we buy supplies year round. watch for sales
That’s a great way to save on supplies!
I have never been a classroom parent. I was always a working mom when my kids were school aged. Now I try to help my daughter, because the supply lists the schools send home for my grandchildren are absolutely ridiculous. Some teachers specify certain pricey brand names, and that drives me up the wall. Schools get discounts and provide toilet tissue; why can’t they at least provide facial tissues for the classrooms? This is absurd, especially in an urban school system where many families are barely getting by.
It is crazy – I guess it’s not seen as a true necessity like toilet paper. Hopefully, that changes.
Thank you for sharing this. I try to do this as often as I can. The schools get so short of supplies. Thank you so much for sharing. God Bless
I’m glad you try to help the schools when you can!
I have never been able to do this as I have always had to work full time. I have volunteered to assist with different at times when I could get off work. I do also donate what I can. Great article. Thank you for sharing this
That’s still awesome to volunteer and donate when you can!
My sister in law is a teacher and the school only provides her with $50 for supplies for the ENTIRE year. This means paper, tissues, crayons, notebooks, pencils, movies, etc. While parents are sent a list of supplies to bring for the start of the year, there a handful of students who come from families who just can’t afford it. So, my SIL pays for everything without even a hint of hesitation; needless to say, that $50 is gone before the school year even starts. She does stock up over the summer to save, just like you mention.
I do want to say thank you to all of you who bring extra supplies. I know the teachers truly do appreciate it!
Wow, $50 is nothing for a classroom full of kids. The budget should be way more.
I usually have tissues and cleaning wipes set aside extra for the school.
I know the teachers appreciate that so much!
I’ve never been a classroom parent, but I do help out my 3 grandchildren and a few of my neighborhood kids with school supplies.
That’s awesome you help out those kids with their school supplies!
Back-to-school can be very expensive. My kids are all grown now, but I have 3 school-age grandchildren and I help my daughter and son-in-law out with buying their supplies. The tips on your post are a huge help!
You are a wonderful grandma to help out your grandbabies with their supplies!
yes when my girls were in grade school i hekped out in th class. had so much fun
I bet your girls loved you being there!
I was active with my kids education. Taught them a lot of things before they started school. Was a part-time teacher every evening at home, after working all day. We all read a lot to each other also. As a single parent, I had very little time or energy leftover to volunteer.
Sounds like you did plenty without volunteering!
a great project. we all should do this
Yes, we should all help out school teachers!
I worked full-time when my daughter was in school, so I’ve never had that experience. Thanks for sharing!
I live in a small house so I don’t have a lot of extra room. What I do stock up on is TP since I don’t want to ever run out.
Yeah, that’s something no one should run out of!
I always stock up at the back to school clearance time. I just sent my 11 year old with tissues and wipes for one of his classes.
I bet his teacher loved that surprise!
There are a few items that I always try to keep a stock of in the house. Facial tissue and toilet paper are two of the items that are a must. Then with the school year starting I have hand sanitizer and allergy medication too.
You sound like me – I try to stock all those things as well!
I use back to school sales to stock up on items I use year round in my home office. Really can’t beat the savings offered.
So true – back to school time is a great time to stock up!
I always make sure to have tissue paper in all rooms and in our car for cleaning purposes and emergencies. Plus sanitary alcohol.
I know, right? Tissues can handle SO many jobs!
Would love that cute looking box in the car! Anyway, school has started for us, but since we are homeschooling, it’s just pretty much our day to day routine. But we really have a box of facial tissue at hand for pretty much anything that we need to wipe in our home classroom! 🙂
You are so right – that box would look awesome in the car!
Those are our favorite tissues too and each kid brought two boxes of them to their teachers! Also, love love love the convenience of Scan and Go!
I bet your kiddos teachers love you!
In our home, tissues are a must.Still my kid is 6 years old,so I have to keep an eye on what he does. And tissues are always helpful when it comes to cleaning including wiping his hands after craft activities.
I think tissues are a staple in most houses although we go through more than our fair share. There’s a reason why we call my grandfather the tissue man lol.
I love this topic, always gives me a little bit of sense what I need to do and be prepared for the upcoming school year Thanks!
I hope you guys have a great school year!
Such great advice. Back to school time definitely means exposure to more germs for both you and your kids. Having tissue on hand can help with those germ strike.
I’m so not looking forward to the germs but thankfully tissues help a ton!
Those are my favorite tissues too! Love your post. Setting the example is key! Thanks for sharing!
Setting an example always does more than just saying words, I think.
You can never have enough tissues, for school, home and everywhere else in between. They come in so handy when a messy situation happens.
You are so right! Tissues do a great job at handling most messes 🙂
Here we are required to provide a multitude of kleenex, as well as the other supplies as “community” supplies. It’s a lot.
We had to provide one box of tissues for my son but teachers always love more.
There’s so much you can do with a box of tissues. We used to keep them for projects and such around the classroom.
Tissues always come in handy!
Great post! Keeping up with everything that teachers ask for can be really frustrating. I’m glad that they are different alternatives to make our lives easier. Thanks for sharing!
Buying things in bulk can sometimes help with that frustration – you’ll already have it on hand 🙂
I was a single mom and raised my three sons to take extra supplies to give to those who may not have had much. Tissues, wipes and paper I bought a lot to give to the teachers. Supply shopping was expensive especially because my sons were close in age. They were in 10th, 11th and 12th grade one year!!!
Your kids are close in age! But that was great to help out the teachers even though you had so much on your plate.
I used to go on field trips with my older kids back in the 90s. A lot of the times I was the only parent that went with the school. I enjoyed being there for the kids.
Going on field trips is fun!
I can’t believe it is almost back to school time again! It’s always good to be prepared makes it less stressful
I know – times flies, right?
Yes! I always bring in more supplies than I need to. And I check in throughout the year to see what teachers need more of.
I bet teachers love you!
I know that teachers can always use extra supplies. I will buy some extra boxes of tissues for my kids to bring to school.
The teachers will love that!
Thanks for these great saving tips.
You are very welcome! Buying in bulk is a great way to save on items you use regularly.
My daughter has been buying stuff all summer to get ready for the school year so she doesn’t have to buy it all at once!
I try to do that too when I remember. Our school gives an option to buy a pack of supplies instead of buying everything individually. I do that when I can.
I never had been a class room mom your anything similar but have been around kids
Maybe you’ll get the chance to be a classroom mom one day!
I haven’t been a classroom mom, I have taken my turn at helping with holiday parties, or field trips. that’s always enjoyable!
Those are great ways to help out the teacher too
