Even in today’s financial climate, families are still taking to the road in their decked-out RVs, campervans, and motorhomes for their annual vacation. So you might think that this type of vacation is cheaper than simply staying in a hotel or a resort and you would be right in some instances.
So let’s take a look at when an RV vacation will actually save you money and when it might be more economical to book a hotel.
RV Vacations are Cheaper if you are Taking the Family
If you have more than four people in your family (think The Brady Bunch), then it is most probably more cost-effective to rent an RV than to book two or even three rooms in a hotel. Family vacations are, after all, about spending quality time with one another – not spending a fortune on hotel rooms.
So unless you have a limitless supply of money, spending your budget on fun family outings along your journey can be much more beneficial than spending it on multiple hotel rooms.
RVs are Cheaper When Your Only Option is a REALLY Expensive Hotel
Even if you have less than four people in your family, it can still be cheaper to rent an RV and explore the surrounding area than it is to spend a couple of hundred dollars on an expensive hotel room PER NIGHT. Think of all the sights and experiences you can have along the open road, rather than staying in a hotel room, even if it is a resort.
Life is meant to be lived, and the open road allows you to explore and discover new things along the way with your loved ones.
RVs can be Cheaper if you Like Travelling From One Destination to Another
Is there any point in staying in a hotel when all you want to do is go on day trips to explore the countryside? You may as well have the enjoyment of fresh air and freedom every day, as well as being able to stop wherever you want, whenever it suits you.
People who prefer an RV vacation or those considering the RV cost of ownership like to feel the wind in their hair and have the freedom to do as they will and don’t particularly like structured holidays, whatever the costs involved.
Some people don’t worry about the price differential between an RV vacation and staying in a hotel, because they simply love traveling along the open road, cooking their own food, and simply heading off in any direction that suits them.
Final Thoughts
As you can see, there are a few instances where it is cheaper to rent an RV than to stay in a hotel. However, this is not always the case, so it is important to research before booking anything.
Renting an RV can be a fantastic way to travel with your family and friends, as well as providing you with all the creature comforts of home.

My parents have a motor-home also known as an RV and they loved it, they have it up for sale at the moment as dad is unable to drive it any more but they took many holidays in it right up till about 2 years ago. I prefer staying in hotels/motels when travelling nowadays that it is only Tim and myself but when the girls were little we usually stayed in caravan parks in cabins still it was fun and we had many great holidays
I’ve never stayed in an RV. I know my husband would LOVE to go on a real road trip in one one day.
