Summer Outdoor Activities to Help Your Child Develop Motor Skills

No matter if you live in a place where all four seasons come in full force or somewhere where it feels like summer all year round, you’ll agree that warm weather and sunny days are great for outdoor activities. Especially, if you have kids and are concerned about their early childhood development.

When it’s warm and dry outside, parents can enjoy a wide variety of activities with their kids. Certain outdoor activities can not only keep your kids happy and entertained but also can help them explore the world and develop motor skills. Interested? Read on to learn more.

Gardening

Although commonly overlooked by parents, gardening is an amazing outdoor activity for kids of virtually any age. The perks are numerous.

To begin with, it is likely to inspire your kids to eat healthy foods. What’s more, it’s a great reason to stay outdoors for a longer period of time. And, it’s been proven by scientists that gardening is beneficial for mental health.

Next to that, gardening can educate kids on natural processes and science. But above all, gardening helps develop large motor skills in kids. As planting and taking care of plants requires dealing with seeds, spray cans, soil, and dirt—it’s a great exercise for children.

Ball Games

Let’s face it: playing with balls is an inherent part of any kid’s life. There are plenty of ball games to choose from.

Some are better to play in a large group of kids, while others are good for playing in pairs. Some require a large ball while others might make you buy a number of smaller ones.

But what all the ball games have in common is that they help kids develop motor skills. Believe it or not, even a simple throw and roll ball game can help tremendously.

Painting

It’s hardly possible to find a kid who doesn’t like to paint. For the majority of kids, painting is fun. And the activity gets even more interesting when placed outdoors.

Take your kids to a park or a seashore, bring some kids’ paints, a drawing pad, and some water or wet wipes to clean hands. Then ask them to choose an object they like the most and try to paint it.

To make this activity even more engaging, get involved too. Why not become the first art teacher for your kids?

Simple Hiking

If your kids are older than 5 and you have enough time for a long walk, hiking might be the best option. Think of a simple but interesting route, pack some food and water, and go hiking in a company of your little human beings.

Ideally, your route should involve uneven surfaces and some climbing. Not only will your kids have fun, but they also develop their motor skills and build endurance.

Riding a Bike

It turns out, riding a bike is not only good for having fun and traveling from point A to point B. As studies show, regular bike rides can also help kids develop their motor skills.

However, make sure you’re not expecting too much from your children. As a rule, kids under age 5 are only capable of riding a bike with training wheels, while those older than 5 can master the art of riding a real one.

Summer Outdoor Activities to Help Your Child Develop Motor Skills

As you can see, there are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from. Some of them require equipment and a lot of time, while others don’t. Some might take more time, while the other might be easily incorporated into your kids’ daily routine.

Nobody knows your kids better than you do, so make sure to implement parental control on your child’s preferences and likes. After all, making your kids happy and entertained should always be a priority.
