Digestive health support is SO important for, well, EVERYONE — including our pets.
In case you didn't know, having a healthy digestive system goes hand in hand with having a healthy immune system. This is because the majority of our immune system lives in our gut. This is where probiotics come in for humans and dogs alike.
It’s all about the gut, the gut, and nothing but the gut!
I've been taking probiotics for years but only recently have started giving it to my pets. I want them to live long healthy lives and probiotics can only help them!
What are probiotics? Probiotics are live, ‘good' bacteria that, when consumed in adequate amounts, can benefit your dog's health. These guys help balance out gut bacteria, promoting digestive & immune system health.
Buy Dog Food with Probiotics
It's important to me to stay on top of my families health — this means my pup Oreo's too.
We always make sure she gets enough exercise and water, but one of the easiest ways I've found to support her digestive system is to feed her Purina® Pro Plan® SAVOR® Shredded Blend Adult Dog Food – Chicken & Rice (with Probiotics).
Oreo can't take care of herself so it's up to me to make sure she's getting all the nutrition she needs. She really loved the Chicken & Rice variety of Purina® Pro Plan® SAVOR® (as you can see).
Not all Purina® Pro Plan® SAVOR® varieties have probiotics so make sure to check the packaging so you get the good stuff. There should be a ‘guaranteed live probiotics' burst on the bottom right-hand corner of the bag.
With Purina® being the 1st dry dog food brand to have real meat listed as the #1 ingredient, I trust them.
Oreo loves their great tasting food while I love that they have 14 dry formulas with guaranteed live probiotics and advanced nutrition. For more details and to learn more about their 70+ formulas, visit ProPlan.com.
Head to Pet Supplies Plus
When we need to buy more pet food (or anything pet related), we head to Pet Supplies Plus. They have everything we need for our gang of pets. The store has a nice ‘homey' feel (which I love) like a smaller store would yet is good sized.
Everything is neat, organized, and easy to find in clearly marked aisles. They offer so many varieties of premium, organic, all natural and grain-free pet products you're sure to find something your pet will love.
They even have Purina® Pro Plan® SAVOR® with Probiotics for our four cats. Our girls could use happy bellies too!
While we were browsing around Pet Supplies Plus we saw a couple of fish we want to buy too, but we had some other errands to run. Needless to say, we'll be back for the fish and all our pet needs!
Have you given your dog probiotics yet?

This definitely sounds like a great dog food, thanks for sharing! We don’t have a dog at the moment, but we plan on getting one when we move into our new house. I will keep this in mind.
What kind of dog do you want to get?
My dogs never used probiotics. I use them after having issues 3 years ago. Doctors kept saying try this pill. It didn’t work ok try this one. Got tired of spending money on pills that did nothing but give me diarrhea (which was my issue to begin with) heard about probiotics and started taking them. Issue resolved within a month.
I am so glad to hear you’ve had a great experinece with probiotics. Your dog will love them too.
My boy is very picky. I actually have recently started making his dog food and he loves it so I won’t be going back to dog food any time soon. I have not tried him on probiotics since he doesn’t see to have digestive problems…he just wants people food!
Making dog food sounds interesting. How do you make it?
I have been seriously thinking about taking probiotics for myself, but now I am added our little dog, Casey to that list. Thanks for your informative article. I am always looking for ways to keep his in good all round health and improving my own health.
I’m so glad to hear that you stay on top of your families health (including the pets!)
No probiotics for us. I guess that’s what’s next in our future.
Probiotics are worth trying if you have any digestive issues or are sick a lot.
No my cats have never had them That is a good idea though.
You should try Pro Plan. It can’t hurt!
I don’t have a dog. I will share this with my cousin – she has 4 !
Your cousin sounds like a big dog fan!! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Probiotics is a family affair including our little fur baby. He loves the Purina Proplan.
I’m so glad to hear your furbaby loves Pro plan! My pup gobbles it down too.
Not tried probiotics.
Neither me or my dog Sandee have tried probiotics but we are going too
Sandee will thank you with a lot of licks!
no ,neither me or my dog has ever used this before
You should give probiotics a shot or at least talk to your doctor about them. They could really benefit you.
No I haven’t brought any for my pet dog, might have to give it a try though.
Probiotics are great for your pets immune system!
I’ve never used probiotics. But after your article, I feel like it is something that I should do more research on.
Yes, def look into probiotics. They have so many health benefits to us and our pets.
My cat has been on powdered probiotic supplements mixed into his wet food. He’s been taking them for several years and his digestion is better with them.
We add a probiotic powder to my dog’s food too when we aren’t using one that has it in it already.
I have never used any probiotics
You should try probiotics sometime. They are great for your health!
We don’t have any pet. I am sure that our son has use probiotics. I will have to find out.
Awe, I don’t think I could be happy without a pet of some sort. They’ve always been a part of my life.
Having developed a C Difficile infection in hospital following a hip replacement, and having been blitzed with antibiotics, I was prescribed probiotics to help with the ensuing IBS. It did help, and I have repeated after courses of IV antibiotics for leg ulcers. Following this my wife has found Kefir very helpful. With both doctors and Vets using antibiotics so widely it makes sense to always try to put the natural gut bacterial flora back to normal following treatment. However, as a word of caution, I am also sensitive/allergic to Cow’s Milk Protein and have found many human probiotics are based around a Cow’s Milk substrate. I know cats often love Cow’s milk, but I wonder if other species may react to cow’s milk proteins in probiotics?
I did not know that about probiotics and cow’s milk! I’ll have to read more into that as sometimes I can be sensitive to milk.
No I haven’t. I haven’t given it much thought.
Probiotics are great for everyone’s health!
My dog has never tried probiotics. I think it will be great for him since he’s getting older.
It’s the perfect time to give his immune system a boost!
I didn’t even know that they made probiotics for pets!!
They sure do, Shannon. These days they make probiotics for everyone including the dog lol.
My dog, Chaz, was put on a probiotic when they thought she had bowel cancer. I finally took her off everything which was bloating her and making her so sick, she got over it and has done well so far and that is over a year ago.
I’m so sorry to hear about your dog’s issues. I’m glad she’s doing better!
Yes, my Chaz is in great health now, but she can’t eat any table food or she gets Diarrhea right away. Other than that she is a healthy girl. If she does get it or is sick to her tummy, like she was a week ago for 3 days, she was throwing up, I give her rice and hamburger with no fat in it and it cleared her tummy right up. She never did have bowel cancer, thank goodness.
I’m glad Chaz is doing much better!!
I have tried them with some success. My cat hasn’t & doesn’t need them.
You never know – probiotics could help your cat too!
I’ve tried probiotics but unles s you can count eating yogurt, my pets have not. We have 12 cats and one patient dog. Wonder if mouse heads have any probiotics effect? Oh! The CRUNCHY GOODNESS! 😋
Haha. Wow, 12 cats! I hope you live on a farm or something. We maxed out at 4 cats but my son would totally have more if we’d let him.
My dogs don’t currently take probiotics. Now that I know that Purina offers this, I need to get it for my furbabies!1
Your furbabies will thank you!!
I’ve had bunnies and haven’t use probiotics. But I’m watching my sister’s cat while they are building a new house. They’d be good for him.
They would be great for your sister’s cat!
No my pets do not use probiotics as they have not been recommended to me by the vet.
Have you talked to your vet about them?
I didn’t know until lately that animals could take probiotics! I’ve been taking them since last year. My gut feels healthier. I have noticed a slight change in my sugars! I am going to look into this for my pets. I want to keep them healthy 😍
I’m glad probiotics have been helping you. Your pets will love them too!
I do not as of yet give my dog probotics. However I do try to give him yogurt everyday.
Do you mix the yogurt with anything?
I’ve never used probiotics. If I get a dog again, I might want to do that.
It’s great for their health!
No I have never tried Probiotics but I should try them.
Your pets too 😉
My furbaby Tank has but my other Tay has yet to try it. I think we need to change that!
Tay would love it I’m sure!
I’ve never thought of giving my dogs probiotics. They’re both senior dogs (13 & 14yrs) – I wonder how their bodies would handle it…
I think it would be great for them! It would help their immune system 🙂
This dog food sounds very good. Oreo is so cute!
Thank you! She’s a sweetie 🙂
My dog would definitely benefit from a probiotic.. Lord knows what she eats when shes outside in the backyard.
I know what you mean! My dog probably eats all kinds of weird and gross things I don’t know about when she’s in the backyard lol.
Your dog is beautiful. No pets here. Probiotics is not something we do regularly, but yogurt and sauerkraut once in a while.
Do you think you’ll get any pets in the future?
We have never tried probiotics for our dog Duke. He has never had any digestive issues and eats whatever food we buy with no problems. I imagine as he gets older this would be very helpful.
Yes, please consider probiotics as Duke ages. Our bodies tend to get more finicky then.
This does look like it would be a great way to keep your doggy’s tummy feel the best it can. This is so important for them as well as it is for us.
SO true! Probiotics are great for EVERYONE 🙂
We have not tried them yet, but we would be open to it. I have tried them myself before.
I hope probiotics worked for you!
I don’t have any pets but I can see why probiotics would be good for them. New research says that full body health for humans starts in the gut so I’m sure it’s the same for animals too
I’ve always heard that too and it makes sense. The gut is where everything we ingest goes.
We love this dog food! Great nutritious food is so important for our pets!
You’re right – Great dog food is SO important!
I haven’t tried this before, will keep this in mind. Thanks for sharing this with us!
I’ll have to try this for our dogs. We have a Corgi and two Australian Shepherds. They seem to like Pedigree, but we have been looking for something better.
My border collie really seemed to like this food! I think she likes the different texture.
Probiotics are great for cats and dogs! Pet supplies plus sounds like a great place.
Pet Supplies Plus is an awesome pet store!
Purina is very nice for dogs. A lot of my doggy pals are feeding their fur babies Purina. Unfortunately one of my boys is allergic to it.
Awe, are they allergic to all of them? They have over 70 different formulas.
Great post and great product. I am hoping to get a dog soon and this was very helpful
What kind of dog do you want to get?
This looks and sounds great. I am so much more concerned with my dogs now than I used to be. So important, to have this.
So great to hear that your dog’s health is becoming a priority.
Yes I am aware that Probiotics can really helps for healthy tummy and I drink Yakult(a brand) for that. I didn’t know they have foods for dogs that has Probiotic now. That is so cool!
Yep, probiotics are proving to be great for almost anyone 🙂
An interesting post, we don’t have any pets but will recommend this to friends who do.
Keep it in mind if you ever get a cat or dog. It’s great!
I love that! I always feed my family probiotics so it makes sense to give some to my dogs too. I have one dog with stomach issues so I may need to try this with her.
If your dog has stomach issues sounds like they need some probiotics. I hope it helps!
there is nothing more beneficial than buying the right food with good ingridients – it saves many trips to the vets
That’s so true! Saves time, money, and keeps them super healthy 🙂
I have just passed this post to my brother! He is just thanking you! 🙂
Thanks so much! Your brother’s dog will love it!
This is a great product, I wonder to get this brand in India.
That’s a very good question! I bet you can find out on their site: https://www.proplan.com/dogs/platforms/savor
What a great brand; we are planning on getting a puppy soon! I’ll have to remember this for when we bring our girl home!
Awe, what kind of puppy are you getting?
We monitor our dog’s digestive health very closely, as well! Sounds like a great product; I’ll have to give this a try for our fur baby!
Sounds like ProPlan is perfect for you!!
We’ve been trying out different foods with our puppy. It’s amazing how different foods can have different effects on how they feel.
It makes sense, though. I know different foods can make me feel different.
I’ve not used probiotics; my husband has and noticed a difference. As for my dogs, not so much.
They can take some time to kick in, I believe. And you have to be religious about taking them.
I do not have a pet but would give them probiotics as I believe in them in my own diet and vitamin regime.
That’s great to hear! Probiotics def help them out just like they do us.
Not having a dog I didn’t know that they too could have such problems …
Yep, even cats can too. Probiotics really help their bellies!
Thanks for the tips. Very useful! DO you have any tips on decide how much to feed your dog based on the weight/body size
Typically, on the back of the bag, there should be a weight/food serving size recommendation. Personally, my dog eats two cups a day with some wet food add-ins.
This sounds like great food! Not many people realize it, but dogs actually have sensitive digestive issues. It doesn’t take much to give them problems. I’ll have to pick up some of this for my two dogs.
Your dogs will love ProPlan!
My whole family uses probiotics daily. I have not given them to my dogs yet.
You should! Probiotics are great for pets too 🙂
I don’t have any pets at the moment. It does make sense to give them probiotics for their digestion. My whole family takes probiotics, so why not give them to your pet too.
That’s great your whole family takes probiotics!
I don’t have a dog. I can see how this would be helpful to dog owners.
They have a probiotic formula for cats too!
I always give my cats probiotics every month. Some of them maybe not taking this seriously, but I do. After all, my cats is like my family and make sure they healthy is my priority now,
I’m so glad to hear you treat your cats like family!
Yes I’ve used proplan for my cat, he likes it. I think probiotics are great.
Yes I’ve used proplan for my cat, he likes it. I think probiotics are great.
We love Purina for our crazy Boxane, but haven’t tried this particular formula yet. Sounds like it would be super beneficial to give it a try though!
If your pup already loves Purina, she’ll probably love this one too!
