Our home is our sanctuary, and the last thing you want in your home is an intruder. Whether you already own a shotgun or want one, you’ll want to check out these home defense tips. These are great ways to keep you and your family safe in case of intrusion.
Check out our home defense tips here, and when you’re ready to buy a shotgun with ammo, make sure you get the right one!
Home Defense Tip #1 Be prepared for anything at any time
Have your weapon in a safe location you can reach quickly, whether it's daytime or midnight. Having more than one may come in handy as well.
Home Defense Tip #2 Keep ammunition in the same room as your shotgun
This way, you can quickly load your weapon and protect your home and family. Because we all know scrambling for ammunition in the middle of a break-in would be extremely difficult.
Home Defense Tip #3 Take a concealed carry class
While we certainly don’t recommend trying to conceal carry a 12 gauge shotgun, the class holds invaluable information.
From knowing what you can protect to going over the different laws in your state, this is a great starting point for anyone interested in gaining more information on being a law-abiding gun owner.
This also allows you the ability to transport your shotgun in case you move. Plus it offers you the opportunity to conceal carry a smaller weapon while you are out.
Whether you plan on carrying every day or not, the information in these classes cannot be beaten, plus, having your license will help you to not have to wait as long to purchase firearms and ammunition if you haven’t done so already.
Home Defense Tip #4 Go to the shooting range
You may be thinking that with a shotgun, you won’t need to worry about your aim, and while this can pack quite a punch, it is still beneficial to know how to accurately shoot, aim, load, and unload your weapon.
Going to a range will give you the practice you need to master this.
There are specific range rules that must be followed. You must listen to the range guides, as well as work on your aim. This can help you if you do choose to conceal carry a different weapon in the future or if you plan to participate in shotgun competitions.
Home Defense Tip #5 Keep your shotgun clean
The last thing you want is your gun jamming while you are attempting to protect your family from an armed intruder, and that could happen if it’s not been adequately maintained.
Make sure after shooting it every single time that you take the time and effort to clean it properly. This will also allow you to get to know your weapon and know exactly what pieces come out and how to put them back in.
This is a must-know for any gun owner, especially one who wants to have a weapon on-hand for home defense. Stay safe guys!
