When I was in 6th or 7th grade we did a french fry taste test from some fast food restaurants in the area. I don't really remember what the premise was but I remember Rally's french fries won hands down. They are still probably my favorite fries to this day. Sadly, there are no Rally's where I live now. The closest is it's sister store Checker's around three hours away. I love them but not that much.

kitchen pal french fry cutter

I decided to take a shot and make some at home since I have this great French Fry Potato Cutter. This fry cutter cuts potatoes into perfect sized fries (two sizes). You simply choose what size fries you want and put in the corresponding stainless steel grate. Suction the device to the counter. Place in a medium sized potato (or other hard veggie) and press the lever to push it through the grate. Super easy and it works great!

I am a small woman that doesn't work out unless you count walking around the block and I was able to press the lever down and up with no problems. You just have to make sure everything is properly secure in place. I found that using potatoes from those 3 or 5 pound bags work great.

rally's fries

As for the french fries, I found a recipe online for the batter. Personally, I don't think they taste like Rally's fries. Granted I haven't had them in a while. You be the judge!

Wannabe Rally's French Fries

French fries in a thin batter that make them resemble Rally's or Checker's fries.
Course Side Dish
Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes
Servings 4 people

Ingredients

  • medium sized potatoes
  • 1 cup pancake mix
  • 1/8 cup corn meal
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp ground mustard
  • flour
  • 3/4 cup water
  • oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Pour oil into fryer and set it to 400F or it's highest setting if lower.
  2. Cut potatoes into fry shape, about 1/4 in diameter or use a french fry potato cutter. Place in cold water until you are ready to batter them.
  3. In a medium bow, combine pancake mix, corn meal, baking soda, and all of the spices. Stir well. Pour in water and thoroughly mix together. If batter isn't thin enough add more water.
  4. Remove fries from water and drain. In a separate bowl place some flour. In small batches, toss fries in flour until coated. Dip fries into batter making sure there is only a thin coating. Fry until evenly browned. Drain on paper towels. Serve hot.

I love Rally’s french fries. I always wondered what delicious seasoning they used. It’s super interesting to see that you used pancake mixes on the french fries, and I am sure it really helps the seasoning stick and obtain that crunchy coating.

It was an interesting try but didn’t turn out quite how I wanted it to. I say just by the Rally’s fries at the store lol.

I’ve never had Rally fries. Looked on their site and found: We couldn’t find any of our restaurants within 30 miles of 80232.

The good news is, you can still enjoy our Famous Seasoned Fries by visiting the grocery section of most Walmart stores.
