You should never get complacent in your position at work, no matter how stable it might seem. It’s important to always be on the lookout for ways to improve your profile and make yourself more attractive to employers. Depending on your career, you might want to prioritize certain methods over others. Let’s look at the available options and how you can take advantage of some of them.

There are some aspects of every professional’s job that you can improve on. Here are eight ways you can increase your value and advance your career! Click To Tweet

Find Fields That Work Well In Combination with Your Main One

When building up your skills, it’s a good idea to focus on fields related to your current one. There might be some interesting opportunities for transferring your skills to another area.

This is also a great way to address the feeling of burnout creeping up on you. Having a skill set that can be utilized in several industries gives you flexibility in the types of jobs you can take.

Learn a Thing or Two About Optimization

No matter what line of work you’re in, you can probably benefit from learning something about flow optimization.

There are some advanced techniques available nowadays, and they are often used in prominent companies on all levels. You might be surprised to find out that some of these methodologies are already being utilized at your workplace.

Gain Leadership Skills

Leadership skills can benefit anyone, even those without any aspirations for climbing up to this kind of position. It’s always good to know how to handle stressful situations, delegate tasks, and communicate with your coworkers more efficiently. And this is precisely what being a good leader is about.

Some in-depth training courses can shed a lot of light on the subject if you’re curious. You don’t have to dig too deep – just learning the basics can often be enough to give you a new perspective on your work and help you improve certain aspects of it.

The Benefits of Career Coaching

Don’t underestimate the potential of career coaching. It’s something that some people tend to ignore completely, but the truth is that it’s more relevant than ever for some careers. There is a lot of “hidden” information required to move up the career ladder. You can’t always rely on your experience alone to understand all of these details.

Having someone experienced to give you a rundown of how things work and explain everything from an overhead perspective can be immensely useful.

Placement career coaching is an excellent example of a service that can help you take your work profile to the next level. You’re going to face various challenges in your career, and a company like Placement can give you the proper guidance for overcoming them effectively.

Technology Can Benefit Everyone Nowadays

Like leadership skills, gaining a deeper understanding of technology can benefit you in many lines of work. Tech has an active presence in almost every career these days, even if you don’t directly interact with it.

Understanding how these solutions work better than your coworkers can immediately set you apart and make you a much more viable candidate for promotion.

Sometimes you don’t even need to learn that much to move up. In some lines of work, even just knowing the advanced features of Excel will make you more valuable than your peers. And it gets better. If you pick up programming, even just a little bit, you might be able to speed up your workflow by automating certain processes and making others faster.

Build Experience Through Side Jobs

a career book called ultralearning

Side jobs are great for many reasons. They provide you with additional stability, which can make a huge difference in today’s volatile job market. But more importantly, they’re an excellent opportunity to build additional skills, including those completely unrelated to your primary job. This can make you a more flexible candidate on the job market. In addition, it can improve your prospects when jumping careers if things get to that point.

The best part is that it’s entirely up to you what you’re going to pick and what skills you’ll develop through those side jobs. As long as you can balance this with your regular job and other aspects of your life, you’re completely free to approach this in any way you want.

Of course, you should avoid spreading too thin as this can compromise your performance across the board.

Practice Applying for Jobs

Even if you’re comfortable in your current position, you should keep practicing your skills related to applying for jobs. Look for interesting positions, write cover letters for them – maybe even send them.

You don’t have to accept any offers in the end, and you can even feel free to go to interviews and use them for practice. Don't look at it as wasting anyone’s time because if you get invited to those interviews, that means they already see something in you that they don’t in most other candidates.

You never know when this might lead to something interesting! Treat this as a practice run, but still, keep your eyes open for the occasional opportunity it may present. You never know when you might come across an offer that’s significantly more attractive than the one you have, and it can’t hurt to try your luck.

Pick Up a New Language

Learning a new language can often be a great way to improve your prospects and make yourself more attractive to employers. This is particularly true if you currently don’t have any foreign languages as an asset at all.

Don’t fall for the trap of assuming that knowing English is enough. You don’t have to look for a job that utilizes your new languages directly either – if you’re not comfortable working in German, look for someplace where it’s going to be a good additional skill to have.

In some cases, you will never even have to use the languages you list under your skills – they add a nice bonus to rounding up your profile.

These things require you to pay active attention to your profile and continuously contribute something to it. Keeping yourself a viable candidate on the job market is a perpetual task and one that can bring some fantastic benefits in the long run if you play your cards right.

Remember, you don’t have to stay stuck in a career if you want to see some change, and the opportunity for that is often much closer than you might think, waiting for you to seize it.
